Roundup: Bath outright WBL champion; Gaynier sets Delphos St. John’s mark

BATH TOWNSHIP – Bath’s Wildkittens won the outright Western Buckeye League girls basketball title with a 54-26 victory over Van Wert Thursday at Bath.

Bath is 20-2 and 9-0 in the WBL. Ottawa-Glandorf finished second in the WBL at 8-1.

Ruby Bolon led the Wildkittens with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Esther Bolon scored 13 with eight rebounds.

Abbie Dackin had seven assists with three points. Chandler Clark had seven points, four rebounds and four assists.

Van Wert’s Sophia Hough had 11 points. Kyra Welch had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Van Wert is 8-10, 4-4.

The game was tied at 7 after the first quarter. Bath pulled out to a 21-15 lead at the half. Bath led 35-19 after three.

Delphos St. John’s 52, St. Henry 37

DELPHOS – Delphos St. John’s guard Paige Gaynier became the school’s all-time leading scorer for girls basketball in a Midwest Athletic Conference win over St. Henry at Robert Arnzen Gymnasium.

Gaynier scored 21 points and now has 1,355 career points. She passed 2002 grad Rachel Pohlman, who had the top spot with 1,347.

Gaynier hit three 3-pointers.

Melanie Koenig scored 14 for the Blue Jays. Elly Wrasman had 10.

Ashley Ontrop scored 14 for St. Henry.

St. John’s is 10-9, 4-5 in the MAC. St. Henry is 1-17, 0-9.

Crestview 57, Paulding 51

CONVOY – Crestview clinched a share of the Northwest Conference title with a victory over Paulding at Crestview.

Crestview is 17-3 and shared the title with Delphos Jefferson, both at 7-1 in the NWC. Paulding is 16-6, 5-3.

Crestview led 10-4 after the first quarter. Paulding then took a 27-26 lead at the half.

Kalida 49, Continental 17

KALIDA – Kalida ran past Continental to clinch at least a share of the Putnam County League title at Kalida.

Kalida is 15-6, 6-1 in the PCL. The Pirates are 6-14, 2-5.

Brenna Smith led Kalida with 18 points and five rebounds. Grace Klausing had 12 points and four assists. Brooke Vennekotter scored seven.

Maddie Burke led the Pirates with six points and six rebounds. Cate Etter had 11 rebounds and four points.

Kalida led 29-10 at the half and 37-12 after three.

Marion Local 45, Parkway 35

ROCKFORD – Marion Local’s Heidi Rethman scored her 1,000th career point in a Midwest Athletic Conference win over Parkway.

The Flyers’ Alana Pohlman got her 500th career rebound.

Marion Local is 17-5, 7-2. Parkway is 9-12, 1-8.

Marion Local led 26-12 at the half.

Bluffton 49, Lima Central Catholic 30

BLUFFTON – Bluffton pulled away from Lima Central Catholic at Bluffton.

Bluffton is 12-10.

Kylie Monday scored 13 for the Pirates. Laykin Garmatter had 12.

Bluffton led 11-5 after the first quarter.

Columbus Grove 81, Allen East 37

HARROD – Columbus Grove ran past Allen East in a Northwest Conference game at Allen East.

Kenzie King led the Bulldogs with 21 points and five 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds, 10 assists and six steals.

Grove’s Koryn Halker scored 16 with four 3-pointers. Jaylen Sautter scored 15.

The Bulldogs’ Erin Downing had 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. She also had nine steals.

Savana Brooks scored 12 for the Mustangs.

Columbus Grove is 14-7, 5-3 in the NWC. Allen East is 4-16, 0-8.

Grove led 17-4 after one quarter and 39-12 at the half.

Ottawa-Glandorf 46, Kenton 24

OTTAWA – Ottawa-Glandorf wrapped up its Western Buckeye League season with a win over Kenton at Hermiller Gymnasium.

Chloee Glenn led the Titans with 15 points.

O-G is 20-2, 8-1 in the WBL. Kenton is 8-10, 3-5.

Wapakoneta 56, Defiance 44

WAPAKONETA – Wapakoneta knocked off Defiance in a Western Buckeye League game at Wapakoneta.

Wapak is 7-14, 3-6 in the WBL. Defiance is 4-18, 2-7.

Casey Minning led the Redskins with 21 points.

Defiance led 26-25 at the half. Wapak then took a 49-36 lead after three.

The game was tied at 7 after the first quarter. O-G pulled out to a 20-10 halftime lead and led 39-15 after three.

Minster 54, Coldwater 25

MINSTER – Minster, which had already clinched the Midwest Athletic Conference title, finished 9-0 in the MAC with a win over Coldwater at Minster.

Minster is 21-1 overall. Coldwater is 8-11, 4-5.

New Knoxville 51, New Bremen 36

NEW BREMEN – New Knoxville knocked of New Bremen in a Midwest Athletic Conference game at New Bremen.

New Knoxville is 18-4, 7-2 in the MAC. New Bremen is 12-9, 5-4.

New Bremen led 10-8 after the first quarter and 22-17 at the half.

Cory-Rawson 46, Arcadia 34

ARCADIA – Cory-Rawson posted a Blanchard Valley Conference win over Arcadia.

Cory-Rawson is 15-6, 7-3 in the BVC.

Zoe Chisholm led the Hornets with 15 points. Paige McVetta scored eight. Mackenzie Cascaden had nine rebounds.

Cory-Rawson led 15-10 after one quarter and 26-18 at the half.

North Baltimore 47, Pandora-Gilboa 30

PANDORA – North Baltimore went out to a fast start and knocked off Pandora-Gilboa at P-G.

North Baltimore led 18-5 after the first quarter.

P-G’s Lacie Fenstermaker led the Rockets with 16 points and nine rebounds. She also had seven steals and three assists.

Lincolnview 54, Ada 51

ADA – Lincolnview knocked off Ada in a Northwest Conference game at Ada.

The Lancers are 9-13, 2-6. Ada is 5-14, 1-7.

St. Marys 48, Celina 25

ST. MARYS – St. Marys finished 7-2 in the Western Buckeye League with a win over Celina at St. Marys.

St. Marys is 16-5 overall. Celina is 2-18, 1-8.

St. Marys led 21-10 at the half.

Hardin Northern 44, Fort Jennings 32

DOLA – Hardin Northern knocked off Fort Jennings in a non-league game at Hardin Northern.

Hardin Northern is 7-13.

Shawnee 61, Lake 44

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Grace Freiberger had 22 points and five assists, Hailee Conrad scored 16, Best had 11 and seven rebounds and Ania Pearson finished with 12 rebounds Wednesday night for Shawnee.


TRAC tournament

OREGON — Aaron Bowsher (145 pounds) finished second and Davion Browning (182) finished third Wednesday for Lima Senior, which finished seventh with 31 points. Clay (175) won the team title, a half point ahead of Whitmer.

State sites

The state high school wrestling and championships will be conducted at three sites, the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Thursday.

The usual site for the state tournament – Ohio State’s Value City Arena was not available this year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The wrestling tournament, which since 1999 has been held in Value City Arena, will be conducted March 13-14 at Hilliard Darby High School (Division I), Highland (Division II) and Marion Harding (Division III).

Registration is open for the Shooting Stars Invitational basketball competition March 6th and 7th in Van Wert.

Teams are guaranteed four games for $195. Invitational is open to fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys and girls teams. School teams and All Stars welcome. Awards to top two teams. Registration is also open for other events in March June and July. Go to to register and for more information.
