DEFIANCE – Shawnee moved to 7-0 with a convincing 77-43 boys basketball victory over Defiance Friday night at Defiance.

George Mangas led the Indians with 33 points two 3-pointers and four steals.

Tyson Elwer had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Isaac Schlatter hit 17 points, with three 3-pointers, for Defiance. Bradyn Shaw had 11 points with three 3-pointers.

Shawnee is 2-0 in the Western Buckeye League. Defiance is 3-3, 0-1 in the WBL.

Shawnee led 25-7 after the first quarter and 49-21 at the half.

Boys basketball

Kalida 60, Lima Central Catholic 47

KALIDA – Kalida went out fast and knocked off Lima Central Catholic.

Kalida is 6-0. LCC is 3-3.

Kalida led 17-9 after the first quarter.

Temple Christian 39, Elgin 38

LIMA – Temple Christian’s Preston Patrick hit two free throws with six seconds left to lift the Pioneers past Elgin for its first victory at Temple Christian.

Elgin led 38-37 when Patrick stole an inbounds pass on the press and was fouled driving to the basket. Patrick’s two free throws gave Temple a 39-38 lead with six seconds left.

Elgin missed a 20-footer at the buzzer to give the Pioneers the victory.

Patrick and Cody Motter both had 13 points for the Pioneers. Patrick had seven rebounds, while Motter had five boards.

Temple trailed 28-21 after three quarters. The Pioneers then outscored Elgin 18-10 in the final quarter to post the victory.

Temple is 1-2, 1-0 in the Northwest Central Conference. Elgin is 2-4, 0-3 in the NWCC.

Elgin won the boards, 22-21. Elgin had 13 turnovers, while Temple had 14.

Perry 83, Riverside 37

PERRY TOWNSHIP – Perry’s Bubby Knight fired in 22 points and Jeffrey Simpson scored 17 to power the Commodores past Riverside at Perry.

Knight connected on five 3-pointers.

Terry Riley and Ayden Simpson both scored 11 for Perry.

John Zumberger had 14 points for Riverside.

Perry is 7-1, 3-0 in the Northwest Central Conference. Riverside is 1-3, 0-1 in the NWCC.

Perry led 10-9 after the first quarter, then outscored Riverside 22-7 in the second quarter. That gave Perry a 32-16 lead at the half.

Wapakoneta 51, Van Wert 37

VAN WERT – Wapakoneta’s Noah Ambos tossed in 16 points to help the Redskins knock off Van Wert at Van Wert.

Wapak is 5-2, 1-1 in the Western Buckeye League. Van Wert is 0-2, 0-1 in the WBL.

Ambos hit two 3-pointers.

Kaden Siefring added 12 points for Wapak.

Owen Treece paced the Cougars with 18 points and three 3-pointers.

Wapak led 22-18 at the half and 39-31 after three quarters.

Napoleon 44, Miller City 33

MILLER CITY – Napoleon had a big third quarter to upend Miller City at Miller City.

Miller City led 20-18 at the half. Napoleon then outscored Miller City 16-6 in the third quarter to grab a 34-26 lead.

Ross Niese led Miller City with eight points and 10 rebounds. Niese also had five steals and two assists.

Miller City is 1-5.

Napoleon had 10 turnovers. Miller City had 17.

Napoleon won the boards, 30-20.

Lincolnview 56, Spencerville 48

SPENCERVILLE – Lincolnview stayed unbeaten with a win over the Bearcats at Spencerville.

The Lancers are 4-0, 1-0 in the Northwest Conference. Spencerville is 2-5, 0-2 in the NWC.

Collin Overholt led the Lancers with 24 points with three 3-pointers. Clayton Leeth scored 15 and Creed Jessee had nine points.

Josh Henline paced Spencerville with 15 points. Carter Sudhoff had 11 points and Keegan Goecke had 10. Dylan Smith scored nine.

The Lancers led 23-20 at the half and 38-37 after three.

Columbus Grove 47, Paulding 45

COLUMBUS GROVE – Columbus Grove’s Blake Reynolds scored 21 points in the Bulldogs’ victory over Paulding at Columbus Grove.

Trey Sautter added 14 points with four 3-pointers for Columbus Grove. Ethan Halker scored eight.

Blake McGarvey led Paulding with 15 points. Nick Manz scored 14.

Paulding led 39-35 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs are 3-1, 2-0 in the Northwest Conference. Paulding is 3-2, 1-1 in the NWC.

Columbus Grove won the boards, 18-17.

Pandora-Gilboa 47, Leipsic 44

PANDORA – Pandora-Gilboa won its third straight with a victory over previously unbeaten Leipsic.

P-G is 3-3, 2-0 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Leipsic is 5-1, 1-1 in the BVC.

Will Huffman led the Rockets with 15 points and two 3-pointers. Ethan Luginbill scored nine.

Mason Brandt and Dillan Niese both had 13 points for Leipsic.

P-G led 28-22 at the half and 39-36 after three quarters.

St. Henry 45, New Bremen 42

NEW BREMEN – St. Henry got past New Bremen at New Bremen.

St. Henry is 5-2, 2-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. New Bremen is 2-2, 0-2 in the MAC.

Bennet Gels had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for St. Henry. Logan Lefeld had 10 points and four rebounds.

St. Henry’s Casey Bruening had eight rebounds with his six points.

Reece Busse had 14 points and six rebounds for New Bremen. David Homan had 11 points and six boards.

St. Henry outrebounded New Bremen, 27-21.

Marion Local 49, Coldwater 34

COLDWATER – Marion Local bumped off Coldwater at Coldwater.

Marion Local is 2-4, 1-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Coldwater is 3-2, 1-1 in the MAC.

Myles Blasingame led Coldwater with 12 points.

Marion Local led 14-8 after the first quarter and 20-17 at the half.

Ridgemont 73, Hardin Northern 63

RIDGEWAY – Ridgemont’s Nevin Robson tossed in 31 points to lead Ridgemont over Hardin Northern at Ridgemont.

Ridgemont is 4-2, 1-1 in the Northwest Central Conference. Hardin Northern is 4-1, 1-1 in the NWCC.

Robson also had eight rebounds.

Owen Wetherwill had 17 points and was 5 of 12 on 3-pointers for Ridgemont. Cole Morris had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Ridgemont led 39-27 at the half.

Celina 49, Kenton 45

CELINA – Celina defeated Kenton at Celina.

Celina is 2-3, 1-1 in the Western Buckeye League. Kenton is 0-5, 0-2 in the WBL.

Fort Recovery 51, Parkway 43

FORT RECOVERY – Fort Recovery posted a home victory over Parkway.

Fort Recovery is 3-2, 2-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Parkway is 1-2, 1-1 in the MAC.

Versailles 68, New Knoxville 35

VERSAILLES – Versailles sprinted past New Knoxville at Versailles.

Versailles is 2-3, 1-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. New Knoxville is 1-5, 0-2 in the MAC.

Cory-Rawson 43, Van Buren 41

VAN BUREN – Cory-Rawson edged Van Buren at Van Buren.

Cory-Rawson is 2-3, 2-1 in the Blanchard Valley Conference.

North Baltimore 76, Waynesfield-Goshen 66 (OT)

WAYNESFIELD – North Baltimore went into overtime to post a non-league victory over Waynesfield-Goshen at Waynesfield.

Waynesfield is 0-5.

BATH TOWNSHIP – Elida at Bath was postponed. No new date was set.


Ada hires Smith

Ada has hired Toby Smith as its new football coach after the Ada Board of Education approved the measure Thursday at its monthly meeting.

Smith takes over the program after Shawn Christophe resigned midway through the 2020 season.

Smith previously coached at Bellefontaine from 2013-19 where he went 46-27 and won four league titles. Prior to that he coached at West Liberty-Salem for 14 seasons and went 111-40.

Cory-Rawson seeks football coach

Cory-Rawson is searching for a head football coach for the 2021-22 school year. Resumes will be accepted through Jan. 4, 2021. Resumes can be submitted to me via email (

Cory Hefner resigned from the position. Hefner spent six seasons as the Hornets head coach and went 12-37.

Schedule changes


Crestview has been notified that Delphos St. Johns is unable to play this season due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, Crestview and Ottoville have agreed to play on Jan. 19 at Crestview. Junior varsity tip-off time is 6 p.m.


The varsity girls game between Ottoville and Ottawa-Glandorf has been moved up to Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 19. The junior varsity game is slated to tip off at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest.
