Bluffton High School soccer player named to “All Region Team”
Bluffton High School senior Jonathan Schriner was just named to the 2020 United Soccer Coaches (USC) “Great Lakes All-Region Team.”
This is a first in 30 years of Bluffton’s rather storied soccer history. Schriner, who was co-captain this season, led the Pirates in goals (27) and assists (17) and he was one of the lynchpins in the team’s run to the state championship game last year.
There are six USC regions nationwide, and the Great Lakes Region includes: Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kentucky. What’s more, the All-Region Team consists of a mix of players from Divisions I, II and III – combined.
Bluffton head coach Steve Smucker, who has coached at a high school and collegiate level the past 20 years, said this is the first high school player he’s had that has been named to the All-Region Team. He said that considering this is six states, representing all divisions “…this is a very high-quality group of individuals represented here.”
Coach Smucker, who has been the Ohio Northwest District “Coach of the Year” the last two years, said the key to Schriner’s success has been his willingness to consistently put in the work day in and day out.
“Jon is one of those rare guys who believes this,” Smucker said. “There are no shortcuts to this process.”
