What began so well for Lima Senior did not end well.
After scoring first against Fremont Ross on a blocked punt the Spartans watched the Little Giants’ sophomore quarterback Kaden Holmes throw for five touchdowns and run for another in a 42-6 Fremont win at Spartan Stadium on Friday night.
Holmes threw five touchdown passes in the first half when the Little Giants jumped out to a 35-6 halftime lead and ran for the touchdown that sent the game into running clock territory on the opening drive of the second half.
Fremont’s defense also had a big night, holding Lima Senior to 75 yards of total offense.
“When you don’t execute that’s what happens,” Lima Senior coach Alphonso Townsend said. “We knew Fremont was a very talented team. We have to execute in all three phases of the game, which we didn’t.
“The momentum went their way and kept swinging that way,” he said. “When you can’t put the points on the board, what can you do?”
Fremont Ross raised its record to 2-1 overall and in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. Lima Senior is 1-2 overall and in the TRAC.
Holmes connected with Bryson Hammer for three touchdowns on throws of 36 yards, 12 yards and 21 yards in the first two quarters. He also had TD passes of 47 yards to Spencer Price and seven yards to Anthony Vann.
Lima Senior’s high point came early when Naz Cameron blocked a punt and Isaiah Russell picked the ball up and returned it for a touchdown at the 10:35 mark of the first quarter.
But the Spartans struggled offensively and defensively after that. They had four turnovers — two lost fumbles and two interceptions — but only one of those led to a Fremont touchdown.
Fremont went up 7-6 when Holmes hit a wide open Price for a 47-yard score with 5:57 left in the first quarter.
The lead grew to 14-6 when Holmes and Hammer hooked up for a 36-yard touchdown play.
After Fremont recovered a Lima Senior fumble at the Spartans’ 12-yard, it took only three plays for Holmes to find Vann for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 55 seconds left in the first quarter.
Holmes’ fourth touchdown pass, a 12-yarder to Hammer, made it 28-6 with 7:04 left in the first half. After a 7-yard Lima Senior punt, Holmes threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hammer on Fremont’s next play with 6:35 to play in the first half.
Fremont Ross coach Chad Long liked what he saw offensively and defensively from his team.
“In my time being here, I think that’s the best our defense has looked,” he said. “The kids have bought into what we’re doing on defense and we’re playing well.
“Kaden Holmes is one of the better top-tier quarterbacks in our conference. And he’s only a sophomore. We started him as a freshman last year so we have him for two more years after this. He has a lot of talent and he’s a great weapon with his feet running the ball and throwing the ball,” he said.
