Roundup: Ada’s Katayama finishes 2nd in two events at state swimming prelims

CANTON — Ada’s Klava Katayama finished second in the 50 freestyle (23.58) and 100 butterfly (55.57) during Thursday’s preliminaries at the state Division II swimming championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The Celina 200 medley relay team of Kenzie Conn, Claire Gass, Emma Guggenbiller and Zoe Rolfes was fifth (1:48.51). Celina’s 400 relay team (Claire Gass, Zoe Rolfes, Emma Guggenbiller, Kenzie Conn) was seventh. Gass was also eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.36). The top eight in each event qualify for today’s A finals.

The Ottawa-Glandorf 200 medley team of Maddie White, Marissa Beckett, Sydney Porinchok and Abby Warnecke was 14th (1:52.18). Porinchok also was 15th in the 100 butterfly (58.21). Conn was ninth in the 100 backstroke (58.86) and tied for 15th in the 100 freestyle (54.04). The Ada 200 freestyle relay team (Carlie Oldfield, Kaitlyn Bowden, Paige Cole, Klava Katayama) was 13th (1:41.67)

Those finishing ninth through 16th qualify for today’s B Finals.

Among the boys, Wapakoneta (Danilo Martinelli, Alex Honigford, Nate Metzger, Nate Miller) was fifth (1:29.03) and Shawnee (Evan Patterson, Charles Spyker, John Briggs, Benjamin Curl) was sixth (1:29.04) in the 200 freestyle relay and Wapak (Danilo Martinelli, Alex Honigford, Nate Metzger, Nate Miller) was seventh in the 400 freestyle relay

Shawnee’s 200 medley relay (Charles Spyker, Evan Patterson, John Briggs, Benjamin Curl) was 11th (1:39.09), Shawnee’s Evan Patterson was 13th (59.98) and St. Marys’ Kyle Lucas was 16th (1:00.11) in the 100 breaststroke. Minster’s Nicholas Clune was 15th in the 100 backstroke (54.16), Wapakoneta’s Danilo Martinelli was 16th in the 50 freestyle

The remaining girls events as well as the boys competition results were not posted by deadline.

ROSSFORD — Wapakoneta had the high team total of 3,860 at Interstate Lanes with St. Marys (3,859), Perrysburg (3,822), Ashland (3,806), Lexington (3,707) and Celina (3,662) also advancing to districts.

Perrysburg’s Jared Carr had the high individual series (623) with St. Marys’ Derek Fisher (622) and Cameron Now (617) finishing second and third respectively. Wapakoneta’s Sam Wagner (600) and Caige Schnarre (583) were seventh and 10th respectively. Britt Hole led Celina with a fifth-place 603. Elida’s Matt Adcock rolled a sixth-place 602 to advance as an individual. Lima Senior’s Isaac Hicks (577) also advanced individually.

District play is scheduled to begin at noon, Saturday, Feb. 29, at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta.

DEFIANCE — Joshua Thorbahn had 14 points and Drew Fisher scored eight for Ottoville (18-3).

Wrestling

Shawnee 46, Kenton 18

Shawnee’s Ethan Morgan (120 pounds), Mason Adlesh (138) and Joey Hale (195) and Kenton’s Ethan Manns (182) each pinned their opponents. Shawnee’s Howie Perkins (170) won by major decision.
