LIMA — Lima Senior celebrated a crest of emotion after Thursday’s 49-45 football victory over Lima Central Catholic.
So the Spartans soccer team figured it would jump on for the ride.
Lima Senior rode the wave to a 4-1 victory over LCC in boys soccer Saturday at Spartan Stadium.
Lima Senior senior Caden Fry had a three-goal hat trick for the Spartans. It was his second hat trick of the year and third of his career.
“This means everything,” Fry said. “I think going into this game we wanted to go off that (football) momentum. That game was in our minds. That game definitely gave us a boost.’’
Michael Bishop scored one for Lima Senior.
Spartans football kicker Andrew Zell had the game’s first assist.
“I just kick (for football), but since we beat them in football we wanted to beat them in soccer. … We wanted to beat LCC twice in one week.’’
Lima Senior led 2-0 at the half and 4-0 before LCC got on the board with 11 seconds to play.
LCC’s Brayden Truex scored at the end to wipe away the shutout.
Lima Senior is 4-1. LCC stands 2-4.
The Spartans controlled the midfield nearly the whole match. That translated into a lot more offensive surges around the 18-yard box.
“That was our game plan going in,” Fry said. “We wanted to possess the midfield and go out wide.’’
Lima Senior outshot LCC 14-6.
“We worked on our spacing and our communication between players,” Lima Senior coach Brad Brock said. “We’ve been working on our eyes off the ball, where we can play it to and where is our vision down the field. It showed up here today.’’
LCC goalkeeper Jack Zerante made eight saves.
For Lima Senior, Kayden Chilcoat had three saves and Quintin Factor had one.
Lima Senior’s first goal was set up when Keegan Halliday played a nice ball into the 18-yard box on the left side to Zell.
Zell dribbled in and fired a low liner which Zerante saved at the left post, but wasn’t able to control.
Fry was there on the right post to gobble up the rebound and pound it into the net.
“Fry is very smart, very intelligent player,” Brock said. “He knows where to be and he can finish the ball.’’
That gave Lima Senior a 1-0 lead with 29:16 left in the first half.
“I saw the ball and I got to the goal as quick as I could,” Fry said. “I got there in time. I just had to crash the goal.’’
Fry then gathered in a loose ball outside the 18, dribbled into the box and fired a 15-yard shot into the net with 2:54 left before halftime.
That pushed the Spartans’ lead to 2-0.
Fry set up the third goal with a pass into the left side of the box to Isaiah Mendez, who fed Bishop 8-yards out.
Bishop’s shot found the net to make it 3-0 with 23:01 to go.
Fry got his hat trick when he dribbled into the box, then lost the ball 16-yards out. He kept scrapping, re-claimed the ball and rifled it home with 1:34 to go.
That gave Lima Senior a 4-0 lead.
“I tried to play it to my teammate, but it got tangled up,” Fry said. “I won it back and I don’t know what it happened. It was kind of a scramble, then I got around a few kids and saw the opening.’’
It was great bounce-back game for Lima Senior after a 7-1 loss to Toledo Central Catholic earlier in the week.
“We’ve worked on picking our head up,” Brock said. “They did really well today coming off a loss.’’
