Roundup: Van Wert claims girls tennis tourney title

VAN WERT — The hosts won the team title Saturday at the Cougar Classic.

Van Wert finished with 47 points followed by St. Marys (34), Elida (25), Lehman Catholic (13), Wauseon (11), Ayersville (3) and Lima Senior (2).

Claiming division titles for Van Wert were Alli Morrow (second singles), Lizzie Rutkowski (third singles), Paige Moonshower and Allie Etter (first doubles) and Kaylee Jennings and Jada Buckner (second doubles). Allie Vanderhorst of St. Marys won the first-singles championship.


LCC 3, Bath 0

LIMA — The Thunderbirds moved to 2-0 on the season with a 25-8, 25-19, 25-21 victory.

Rosie Williams had nine kills and three blocks, Hannah Riepenhoff had 26 assists and Victoria Lauck had 13 digs for Lima Central Catholic. Bath’s individual stats were not reported by deadline.

Leipsic 3, Holgate 0

LEIPSIC — Coach Brent Newell got his 200th career varsity win in the 25-12, 25-9, 25-6 victory. Newell has been coaching the Vikings since 2014 with previous stops in Lakota (2008-12) and Pandora-Gilboa (2013).

Lyndie Hazelton had 23 assists, Peyton Heitmeyer had eight kills, five aces and six digs, Brooke Brown had 13 digs, Lizaa Scheckelhoff had seven kills and three blocks and Kasey Brough had seven kills, three blocks and three aces for Leipsic (2-0).

St. Marys 3, Pandora-Gilboa 0

ST. MARYS — The Roughriders (1-5) won 27-25, 25-14, 25-7. Sam Ackroyd had 10 kills, Leah Walter had six kills, Kelsey Poppe had 13 digs, Abbie Young had 10 digs, five aces and 13 assists and Cora Rable had 10 assists for St. Marys.

Elida goes 2-1

ROCKFORD — Elida defeated Hardin Northern 25-10, 25-5 and Lima Senior 25-7, 24-26, 25-8 and fell to host Parkway 26-24, 25-19.

Against Hardin Northern, Kylie Vorhees had eight kills, Eveylyn Frueh had six kills, five aces and nine assists, Cadence Miller had 10 assists and Kenzie Miller had five digs.

Against Lima Senior, Rachel Mitchell had eight kills and four aces, Vorhees had seven kills, Addisyn Freeman had four aces, Amira Freeman had nine digs, Cadence Miller had 14 assists and eight digs and Frueh had 13 assists and seven digs.

Against Parkway, Vorhees had seven kills, Cadence Miller had eight assists, Kenzie Miller had eight digs and Frueh had eight assists and seven digs.

Parkway won the championship with 25-2, 25-21 victory against Hardin Northern and a 25-9, 21-25, 25-23 triumph against Celina, which finished second, defeating Delphos Jefferson 25-16, 25-11 and Lima Senior 25-19, 25-20.

Shawnee 3, Arlington 0

ARLINGTON — The Indians won 25-20, 25-23, 27-25. Kelsey Fischbach had 26 assists and 12 digs, Kelly Armentrout had nine kills, Isabelle Murray and Trinity Gearing had eight kills each, Paige Maxwell had 13 digs and Josie Addis had 12 digs for Shawnee.

Minster 3, Sidney 1

SIDNEY — The Wildcats won 25-18, 25-18, 25-20. Averi Wolf had 10 kills and three aces, Ava Sharp had nine kills, Kaitlyn Wolf had 23 assists and 13 digs and Emily Stubbs had 14 digs for Minster.

New Knoxville 3, Botkins 0

NEW KNOXVILLE — The Rangers won 25-7, 25-11, 25-7. Megan Jorosic had 10 kills, Ellie Gabel had eight kills and five digs and Carly Fledderjohann had 27 assists for New Knoxville.

Bearcats win two

SPENCERVILLE — The host Bearcats defeated Perry 25-18, 25-22 and Ridgemont 25-15, 25-15 to move to 3-2 on the season. No individual stats were reported by deadline.

New Bremen 3, Columbus Grove 1

COLUMBUS GROVE — The Cardinals won 25-13, 25-13, 20-25, 25-14. Alayna Ricker had six kills and eight digs, Cassie Heilman had five kills, Lauren Benoth had nine assists, Becca Choi had nine assists and Abigail Gladwell had nine digs for Grove.

Blue Devil Classic

BEDFORD — Lima Central Catholic (343) finished second behind Kings High School (335) with Kent Roosevelt (359), Green (361) and Highland (362) also finishing among the top five in the 21-team tournament.

LCC’s Mary Kelly Mulcahy tied Highland’s Alessandra Goyete for the low round of 75 on the par-71 Shawnee Hills Golf Course. Goyete was named medalist through a scorecard playoff. Erin Mulcahy (80), Emma Mayers (93) and Bridget Mulcahy (95) also contributed to LCC’s team total.

LIMA — Justin Braun, Clayton Leeth, Landon Moody and Ethan Crow had goals.

St. Marys 1, Bexley 1

ST. MARYS — Max Mielke had the host Roughriders’ goal on assist by Adam Tobin. Teammate Correy Nelson made 11 saves in goal.

Lexington 3, Shawnee 2

LEXINGTON — Carter Jensen and Jack Fraser had Shawnee’s goals. Teammate Jake Miller contributed an assist.

Ottoville 2, Fort Jennings 0

FORT JENNINGS — Nolan German and Joe Miller each had a goal.

FORT JENNINGS — Elizabeth Meyer had the game’s only goal. Mackenna Stechschulte and Reilly Fitzpatrick combined to make three saves in goal while DSJ counterpart Reagan Ulm made four saves.

KALIDA — The Wildcats fell to 0-3 on the season.

CELINA — Jena Wilson had three goals, Makenna Klingshirn scored twice and Reilly Cox, Taylor Klingshirn and Natalie Braun each had a single tally.

MILTON-UNION — Minster (40 points) finished second behind West Liberty-Salem (30) among the 18 posting team scores in the D-III race. Crestview (201) was seventh and Botkins (228) finished eighth.

Botkins’ Emma Koenig (19:57.8) was fifth behind race winner Addie Engel (17:49.0) from Catholic Central. Minster’s Ella Boate (19:59.8, sixth), Taylor Roth (20:15.3, ninth) and Mackenzie Bohman (20:16.9, 10th) finished in the top 10.

Shawnee (109) finished fifth and Wapakoneta (245) was 10th in the D-I/D-II behind team champ Lebanon (33). Shawnee’s Celia Spieles (20:27.6) was 13th behind race winner Faith Duncan (17:55.8) from Lebanon.

MILTON-UNION — Botkins was fourth, Minster finished fifth and Crestview was 16th out of the 29th that posted team scores in the D-II/D-III race. Minster’s Alex Albers (16:38.8) finished second behind Cedarville’s Ethan Wallis (16:29.8). Botkins’ Collin Watterson (17:21.4) was 11th. Shawnee was eighth and Wapakoneta was 13th in the D-I/D-II race. Shawnee’s Isaiah Johns (16:39.2) was ninth behind race winner Sam Duncan (15:50.0) from Lebanon.
