CONVOY — Crestview sophomore Kalen Etzler became the first Ohio State men’s basketball recruit in the 2021 recruiting class when he committed to the Buckeyes on Sunday night.

The 6-foot, 8-inch sophomore, who helped the Knights win the Division IV state championship this year, is ranked the No. 51 player overall nationally by 247sports.com.

Etzler went on Twitter to announce his decision. His message said:

“All throughout my life I’ve dreamed of playing Division I basketball and I am blessed to have the opportunity to pursue those dreams. After some time talking to my family, coaches and friends I am proud to announce that I will be staying in my home state and continuing my academic and basketball career at The Ohio State University.

“Thank you to everyone who has recruited me and helped me get to the level I am at now. Special thanks you to Coach Holtman, Coach Pedon and the rest of the OSU staff for investing time in me and having the confidence to move forward together.”

Louisville and Purdue were Etzler’s other top schools. He also had offers from Duquesne, Bowling Green and Miami, where his brother Javin will be a freshman on the Redhawks basketball team next season.
