Roundup: Ottawa-Glandorf clinches WBL boys tennis regular season title

Track and field: New Bremen Cardinal Invitational


DEFIANCE — Ottawa-Glandorf clinched the Western Buckeye League boys tennis regular season title with a 5-0 victory Friday against Defiance.

The Titans (15-0 overall) moved to 8-0 in conference matches with one left to play. All other WBL teams have two or more league losses.

Singles players Carter Welch, Parker Schomaeker and Colin Welch and the doubles teams of Drew Kuhlman and Kamron Maag and Nolan Unterbrink and Sam Schmenk all recorded wins for O-G.

Elida 3, Van Wert 2

LIMA — Singles players Tyler Christoff and Riley Fricke and the doubles team of Jacob Ramirez and Riley Creps won for Elida (7-2 WBL) at Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center. Singles player Zane Fast and the doubles team of Jace Fast and Nick Carter won for Van Wert (9-7, 5-4 WBL).

Shawnee 3, Kenton 2

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Singles player Carter Schaaf and the doubles teams of Garrett DeMoss and Brayden Ward and Vincent Ruscio and Brock Diehl won for the Indians (6-9, 3-6 WBL) against the Wildcats (2-5 WBL).

CONTINENTAL — Blake Elkins had three hits, including a double, and four RBI, Nick States and Jarret Keck each had two hits and Cole Bowers doubled and had two RBI for Continental (5-9).

LIMA — Reece Waithe had a hit and an RBI and Bryce Binkley tripled for the host Spartans.

LIMA — The University of Northwestern claimed its third straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament title and fourth all-time at the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.

The Saints led 2-1 after the conclusion of doubles play with wins in #1 and #2 doubles,the #2 doubles being a 9-8 decision.

Lena Tessmer, however, evened the contest with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles and it remained tied at 3-3 following an Aquinas win in No. 2 singles and Gabriela Eva picking up a 7-5, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles.

WHAC Player of the Year Camila Puente, though, put UNOH up for good by winning 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles and Ellen Sandstrom came up with the clincher, a 6-0, 6-2 decision in No. 5 singles.

With the victory, UNOH (8-14) wins its third straight and fourth overall WHAC tournament title (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and clinches an automatic berth into the NAIA Women’s National Championship, which will take place May 14-18 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. This will be the seventh all-time appearance at the national tournament for the Racers (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

UNOH splits

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The University of Northwestern Ohio defeated Aquinas College 11-1 after falling 6-2.

In the 11-1 encounter, winning pitcher Hunter Conzelmann allowed five hits and no walks while striking out three in five innings. Joey Brinegar had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, Kennedy Arndt homered with three RBI, Eleya Montroy had three hits and an RBI, Joey Brinegar had two hits and two RBI, Mackenzie Watson had two hits and an RBI and Grace Jackson ahd two hits also for the Racers. In the 6-2 contest, Montroy had three hits, including a homer, and an RBI and teammate Shayla Munyan had two hits.

Racers drop two

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — UNOH fell 6-2 and 7-1 to Cornerstone University.

In the 6-2 encounter, Derek Coverstone had two hits and an RBI and Jonathan Rodriguez had a pair of hits for the Racers. In the 7-1 contest, Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI and Michael Knollman and Kyle Bryan each had a pair of hits.
