Roundup: Elwer from Delphos St. John’s wins Hoop Shoot regional

ANGOLA, Ind. — Cameron Elwer of Delphos St. John’s connected on 23 of 25 and then 10 of 10 during the tie breaker to win the boys 12-13 division Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional Hoop Shoot competition.

Elwer, who was representing Lima Elks Lodge No. 54, will now compete in the nationals April 27 in Chicago.

BOWLING GREEN — The Cavaliers (18-9) fell in a Division III regional final. Marcus Bruns had 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Cole Frilling had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Ben Wenning had four steals and Justin Schwieterman contributed six rebounds for Coldwater.

Lima Senior 7,

Newark 5

LIMA — The Lima Senior boys lacrosse team opened its season with a 7-5 victory Saturday against Newark.

Cole Mericle had three goals and Kyshawn Newell and Deavan Scott had two tallies each. Ryan Moore had nine saves for the Spartans.

ALFRED, N.Y. — Cameron Marous scored the game-winning goal on the opening possession of the overtime period at Yunevich Stadium.

With the victory, the Polar Bears move to 5-1 overall this season and extend their current win streak to five games. In addition, ONU has now won 12 successive road contests dating back to the 2018 campaign. The Saxons dropped to 3-1 on the year.

Patrick Moran produced a three-goal hat trick to pace the Northern offense. Marous and Nicholas Groves notched the remaining six goals, tallying two each.

Women’s lacrosse

Ohio Northern 14,

Siena Heights 7

ADRIAN, Mich. — Betsy Naugle and Maddie Storr led the Northern offense with five and four goals, respectively, against NAIA foe Siena Heights at O’Laughlin Stadium.

With the victory, the Polar Bears even their record at 3-3 overall this season. Meanwhile, the Saints drop to 1-5 in the 2019 campaign.
