Roundup: Ohio Northern wins in women’s basketball

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team kicked off 2019 in winning fashion Saturday afternoon, toppling Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum 74-52 inside the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

With the victory, the Polar Bears improve to 8-5 overall and move to 2-4 against the conference circuit. Meanwhile, the Muskies fall to 1-12 overall, which includes an 0-6 mark in league play.

Emily Brock registered a team-high 14 points in the victory to lead three scorers in double-figures and tie her career-high scoring mark for a single outing. She would knock down four 3-point field goals in the contest on a five-for-nine effort overall from the floor to go along with two rebounds and a steal.

Meanwhile, Jenna Dirksen and Emily Mescher (Marion Local) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, to the Polar Bear victory. Abby Weeks led Northern in rebounding with seven boards.

Anderson 76, Bluffton 69

ANDERSON, Ind. — Bluffton fell to 4-9 on the season (2-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference), while Anderson improved to 7-6 (3-3 HCAC).

Bluffton was led by Brianna Gillig with a career-high 22 points. Tj Mills contributed 17 points and Chelsea Moore added 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Aquinas 76, UNOH 67

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Fataya Larry had 14 oints and nine rebounds and Shatisha Dukes contributed 13 points and seven rebounds for UNOH (7-12, 3-6 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).

Men’s basketball

Muskingham 64, ONU 52

NEW CONCORD — The Polar Bears (4-9 overall, 0-6 OAC) fell behind 8-0 in the first 1:22 and trailed 41-15 with 3:40 left in the first half in the game at the Steele Center.

Northern stepped up its defense from there, holding MU to 23 points in the final 23:40 of the game, but could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Ryan Bruns (Marion Local) led Ohio Northern with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Daniel Donner added 12 points and six rebounds and Austin Allemeier (Elida) scored nine points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for ONU.

The Muskies are 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

Anderson 69, Bluffton 61

ANDERSON, Ind. — Bluffton fell to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the HCAC, while Anderson improved to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the HCAC.

Bluffton was led by junior Andrew Renner (Bath) who netted 18 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Aaron Rich dropped in 12 points and Isaiah Taylor scored 11.

Aquinas College 77, UNOH 72

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Zach Montes (23), Nathan Lessing (17) and Willis Mackey (12) each scored in double digits for UNOH (5-14, 1-8 WHAC).

ELIDA — Elida Local Schools will recognize three individuals to be inducted into the Elida Athletic Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 9. A banquet will be held at 1 o,n, in the Elida High School Commons, 401 E. North Street in Elida, followed by the ceremony in the High School Auditorium.

The three inductees are: 2006 graduate Kyle Miller, 2002 graduate Dr. Marchion Hinton and Dennis Schwinnen, who was a tennis coach for 35 years (1974-2009), teacher and guidance counselor at Elida.

The inductees will also be recognized at a Hall of Fame Presentation that evening during the boys basketball game in the Elida Fieldhouse between the varsity and junior varsity games.

WEST MILTON — Coldwater (224.5 points) finished second to Brookville (267) in the 11-team event. Columbus Grove (197) was third and Indian Lake (103) finished seventh.

Coldwater’s Brian Chmielewski (113 pounds) and Nate Hoyng (126), Grove’s Dylan Sargent (220) and Jeff Meyer (285) and Indian Lake’s Hayden Pummel (160) won their respective weight classes.

TROY — Delphos St. John’s (104 points) and Lima Senior (76) finished 10th and 11th respectively in the 14-team competition.

Lima Senior’s Naeem Russell (160) and Chase Martin (182) of Delphos St. John’s won their respective weight divisions.

CIRCLEVILLE — Celina (259 points) finished second to Logan Elm (288) in the 16-team event.

Celina’s Logan Mohlenkamp (170) and Seth Huston (285) won their weight divisions.

CELINA — Britton Hole had the high game (223) and series (406) for Celina at Plaza Lanes. Noah Adcock had the high game (159) and Alec Ewing had the high series (283) for Elida.

Girls bowling

Celina 2,164, Elida 1,765

CELINA — Abby Ehrler had the high game (171) and series (320) for Celina at Plaza Lanes. Kelsey Cox and Delaney Rose each rolled a 128 to tie for the high Elida game. Anna Rose had Elida’s high series (234).
