Western Buckeye League

Bath

Division: II

Coach: Eric Adkins (second season)

2017-18 conference finish: 2-7 in dual matches, seventh in tournament, eighth overall

2017-18 postseason: 10th at sectional, tied for 28th at district, tied for 68th at state

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Eric Adkins (sr., 220/285 pounds), Fielden Deeds (sr., 195/220), Kamrin Arnett (jr., 120), Zach Simpson (jr., 170).

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season:

Coach’s analysis: We have four returning letter winners from last season. Leadershiop starts with our two seniors this season, both of which hope to make an even farther run in the postseason. We have a promising freshman class coming in this year. We are a small team, however, that will not stop us from being a very competitive team in the weight classes we are able to fill.

Celina

Division: II

Coach: Jim Miracle (sixth season)

2017-18 conference finish: 7-2 in duals, 10th in tournament, seventh overall

2017-18 postseason: Ninth at sectional, 36th at district; lost in Region 16-B finals.

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Sam Warner (sr., 120/126 pounds), Nathan Wilson (soph., 120), Joe Warner (jr., 120/126), Logan Keiser (sr., 126/132), Aric Gallimore (jr., 145), Chris Mir (sr., 138/145), Jakob Poor (jr., 138/145), Ethan Ly (jr., 152/160), Logan Muhlenkamp (sr., 170/182), Luke Muhlenkamp (jr., 182/195), Nathan Fortkamp (sr., 182/195), Cory Fortkamp (jr., 195/220), Cayden Thomson (jr., 220), Seth Huston (sr., 285), Gaven Nash (jr., 285).

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Brycen Miracle (fr., 106), Landon Engle (fr., 113), Grant Grieshop (fr., 113/120), Jaden King (fr., 126/132), Kyler Bowlby (soph., 132), Abdulla Davlatboyev (jr., 138), Graeme Stewart (jr., 138/145), Austin Kundtz (jr., 152), Alex Stachler (fr., 195/220)

Coach’s analysis: Our goal this season is to finish what we started last year. We started off 6-0 in the Western Buckeye League but finished at 7-2. Obviously, having one of the largest teams in the are and state (39 kids), we can’t sneak up on anyone, but we can continue to trust the process that has allowed us to get to where we are. We have five returning district qualifiers, a talented freshman class and several upper classmen that have been around for four to five years that will make our team competitive throughout the season. The most important thing about wrestling is challenging yourself to be the best that you can be.

Elida

Division: II

Coach: Tom Mault (second season)

2017-18 conference finish: 2-7 in duals, ninth in tournament and overall

Coach’s analysis: The team and I have very high expectations and many goals that we expect to reach this season. Staying healthy and working hard are both key components in achieving these goals and expectations. A lot of guys put in solid work during the offseason that is sure to pay off this year.

Kenton

Division: II

Coach: Kevin Kapanka

2017-18 conference finish: 0-9 in duals, eighth in tournament, 10th overall

2017-18 postseason: Sixth at sectional, 39th at district

Ottawa-Glandorf

Division: III

Coach: Randy Ebbeskotta (third season)

2017-18 conference finish: 5-4 in duals, second in tournament, third overall

Coach’s analysis: The Titans return four seniors with a lot of experience. State placer Danny Rosales (seventh at state) will anchor a team of four district qualifiers with a mix of incoming freshmen who will make an impact. The team numbers are down due to some injures but we will compete when on the mat.

Shawnee

Division: II

Coach: Mike Lewis (fourth season)

2017-18 conference finish: 5-4 in duals, third in tournament, fourth overall

2017-18 postseason: Seventh at sectional, 20th at district, tied for 47th at state.

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Krisshna Nongkham (jr., 120), Damion Music (fr., 152)

Coach’s analysis: Our goals are the same they have been for the last three seasons: Improve on last year’s results, improve throughout the year and peak as we head into the postseason. Our numbers are low, but what we have are hard working competitors. We have several upperclassmen who are expected to lead and make a run in the postseason.

St. Marys

Division: II

Coach: Larry Gruber

2017-18 conference finish: 8-1 in duals, fourth in tournament, second overall

2017-18 postseason: Fourth at sectional, 35th at district; lost in Region 16-B team dual finals.

Van Wert

Division: II

Coach: Ben Collins (six years a school)

2017-18 conference finish: 4-5 in duals, fifth in tournament, sixth overall

2017-18 postseason: Eighth at sectional, tied for 18th at district, tied for 68th at state.

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Killian Sudduth (soph., 106 pounds), Ben Lange (jr.), Gaby Steyer (jr.), Macein Bigham (soph.), Isaiah Bretz (sr.), Ryan Pratt (jr.), Dale Hammons (jr.), Spencer Blue (soph.), Lloyd Eutsler (sr.), Malachi Battle (jr.).

Promising Newcomers: Arnez Riley (fr.), Eli Kline (fr.), Thurston Miller (fr.)

Coach’s analysis: With two returning state qualifiers and a host of returning letter winners the Cougars look to contend at the top of the WBL. Wapak will again be at the top of the league with a host of other schools looking to knock off the defending champions. Isaiah Bretz already holds the school record for reversals in a career and could end his career with the most wins in school history. Gabe Steyer is 25 wins away from 100 in his career.

Wapakoneta

Division: II

Coach: Jason Rosterfer (19th season)

2017-18 conference finish: 7-2 in duals, first in tournament and overall

2017-18 postseason: Third at sectional, sixth at district, tied for 51st at state; lost in Region 16 final.

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Jacon Schlesselman (soph., 145/152 pounds), Elyjah Roa (soph., 160/170), Bradley Hicks (soph., 132/138), Bryce Knapke (soph., 106/113), Evan Kaeck (jr., 220), Brenan Knueve (sr., 285), Koleman Brown (sr., 182), Keaton Elling (jr., 126/132), Luke Beach (sr., 138/145), Trevor Paugher (sr., 195/220).

Coach’s analysis: We return a good mix of experience. We have four seniors on the team this season and all of them are returning letter winners. We also have six underclassmen that are returning letter winners. Having 10 experienced wrestlers will help out a lot with the younger wrestlers on the team.

Northwest Conference

Ada

Division: III

Coach: Eric Perkins (first season)

2017-18 conference finish: Fourth

2017-18 postseason: 10th at sectional, 28th at district, tied for 52nd at state.

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Jeremy Cameron (fr., 113), Noah Arnett (jr., 285)

Coach’s analysis: We have a young team this year with only two seniors. The majority of our athletes were in the lineup last year as underclassmen. Our focus this season is to continue to get better every day and see where we end up when we get to February. Our wrestlers are working very hard to fill the void left by last year’s seniors and all the success they had.

Others team members: Hunter Paxson (jr.), Dawson Redman (jr.), Eli Myers (soph.), Ethan Garver (fr.), Chase Miller (fr.), Alek Winner (fr.), Nathan Hefner (fr.), Matti King (fr.).

Lincolnview

Division: III

Coach: Steve Pardon (third season)

2017-18 conference finish: Eighth

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Brok Bill (soph., 182 pounds)), Louis Ulrey (soph., 195)

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Caleb Ericson (jr., 160)

Coach’s analysis: We have some great opportunities for our wrestlers this year even though we have only three (wrestlers), they are all close in weight, allowing them to push each other to get to the next level and all get great experiences.

Paulding

Division: III

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Kolya Pascall (soph., 170), Brody Fisher (fr.), Jeremiah Smith (fr.), Thomas Diemer (fr.), Kelvin Ankney (fr.).

Coach’s analysis: We are a very hard working team that cares about the sport and have shown that by our work at practice and the outcome at the meets. However, we need to work on the technical aspect of wrestling. As a team we work very hard but we just need to work on getting better at our wrestling moves. That being said, I am very confident that we will be a lot tougher team than last year. Teams shouldn’t count Paulding out this year.

Cory-Rawson

Division: III

Coach: Justin Parkins

2017-18 conference finish: No BVC standings

2017-18 postseason: Ninth at sectional, 39th at district; lost in Region 18-A dual team semifinals.

Delphos St. John’s

Division: III

Coach: Derek Sterling (1oth season)

2017-18 conference finish: No MAC standings

2017-18 postseason: Eighth at sectional, 38th at district

Returning 2017-18 varsity letter winners: Peter Ankerman (sr.), Trent Vonderwell (sr.), Justin Wieging (sr.), Mark Wrasman (jr.), Chase Martin (soph.), Gage Stemen (soph.)

Others likely to be varsity competitors this season: Troy Smith (soph.), Ryan Stockdale (soph.), Mason Vonderwell (fr.)

Coach’s analysis: Strengths for this season are definitely our leadership and the number of guys we have returning from last season. We won’t need to spend as much time on some of the technique this year, instead we can spend more time on tweeking the technique the guys already have. Also a strength is the competitiveness of our room. We have a lot of guys that push each other extremely hard every practice.

Weakness: I would said is lack of being in the big matches. In order to achieve end of the season goals you have to be in a certain style of district/state type match as many times as possible during the regular season so the guys know how to prepare and react when its time for the big matches at the end of the season. Also these style matches help us coaches know how to prepare each wrestler and what buttons we need to push in certain situations. Each wrestler is unique.
