ADA — Senior guard Jenna Dirksen provided the Ohio Northern women’s basketball team with a late, go-ahead layup with moments remaining in overtime, lifting the Polar Bears to a 66-64 victory Saturday afternoon over in-state foe Ohio Wesleyan at the ONU Sports Center.
Following a missed shot attempt from Battling Bishop guard/post player Claire Sterling, Northern would regain possession as the rebounded shot landed out of bounds with no player able to corral the loose ball. Head coach Michele Durand then utilized a timeout to move the ball to mid-court, setting up the final play. Dirksen beat her defender off the dribble and tossed in a layup from the left side to clinch the Polar Bears’ fourth consecutive victory to open the 2018-19 campaign. The Battling Bishops fall to 2-2 on the campaign.
Dirksen led all scorers with a career-high 22 points on 44 percent shooting from the floor, including a three-for-seven clip from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Polar Bears’ Abby Weeks and Emily Mescher (Marion Local) also registered double-digit efforts as the duo scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Teammate Tori Wyss (Ada) hauled in a career-high 17 rebounds.
