Roundup: Ohio Northern improves to 3-0 in women’s hoops

ADA — Senior Jenna Dirksen led 13 Ohio Northern players in the scoring column with 12 points as ONU defeated area-rival Defiance 90-45 Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improves to 3-0 overall and have now won eight consecutive home openers, dating to the 2010-11 season.

Sophomore Emily Brock added 11 points and freshman Annie Weckesser scored 10for Ohio Northern.

The Polar Bears led for all but 38 seconds of the contest after DC hit a three-pointer to go up 3-2.

ONU answered with an 19-2 run to take a 21-5 advantage with 1:33 left in the first period.

Northern led 36-16 at halftime and stretched the lead to 65-27 after three quarters.

In all, 15 of the 16 ONU players that saw action either scored or grabbed a rebound in the game.

UM-Dearborn 85, UNOH 75

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Northwestern Ohio fell to 3-5 overall and 0-3 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference with the loss to the University of Michigan-Dearborn (7-1, 3-0 WHAC) at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.

The Racers were led by Emily Patton (Upper Scioto Valley) with 28 points and six rebounds. Jer’Taya Hall has 12 points, Leticia Johnson scored 10 and Fataya Larry and Kiara Cain had nine and eight rebounds respectively also for UNOH.

UM-Dearborn 76, UNOH 56

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Racers fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the WHAC. Nathan Lessing scored 13 and Oslbey Mercer had 10 points and six rebounds for UNOH. UM-Dearborn improved to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.

Clay to compete

for Central Michigan

VAN WERT — Van Wert senior Austin Clay has signed a track and field letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Austin has achieved several honors and awards during his high school career including, setting the school shot put record at 56 feet, 11.75 inches, qualifying earlier this year for state in the shot put and qualifying for state in the discus in 2017. He was also a member of the football team.

Bluffton’s Koenig

BLUFFTON — Bluffton’s Alivia Koenig is scheduled to sign a letter of intent to play golf and basketball at Urbana University at 4:45 p.m. Friday in Bluffton’s High School gym.

Koenig qualified for the district in golf in 2017 and 2018, where she finished 27th and 12th respectively. Going into her senior basketball season, Koenig is third all time in career points scored with 1,018. She is also second all time in career 3-pointers made with 192, and is second all time with 68 made three pointers during the 2017-18 season. She also has the record of most 3-pointers made in a game with nine against Perry during the 2015-16 season.
