Roundup: Ohio Northern women win hoops season opener

MEADVILLE, Pa. — The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team raised the curtain on its 2018-19 season in winning fashion Friday afternoon, defeating Chatham (Pa.) 70-43 in the opening game of the Allegheny (Pennsylvania) Tip-Off Tournament inside the David V. Wise Center.

Jenna Dirksen and Emily Mescher (Marion Local) paced the Polar Bear offense with 12 points each. Mescher also had a team-high seven rebounds as ONU won the battle of the boards 50-33.

Emily Brock chipped in nine points off the bench, nailing three 3-pointers, while teammates Sydney Ward and Lexi Jacobs (Wapakoneta) contributed eight points each in reserve roles. The trio’s efforts would lead an ONU bench that outscored the Chatham reserves 35-18.

Chatham 67, Bluffton 63

MEADVILLE, Pa. — The Beavers (0-1) saw their 33-30 halftime lead eclipsed by the Cougars (3-0) in the second half.

Bath graduate Andrew Renner (17), Dezman Brown (13) and Aaron Rich (13) each scored in double digits for Bluffton. Renner also had four assists and teammate Jameel Cosby finished with eight rebounds.

CELINA — Brianna Henning finished with a two-game total of 285 and Abby Ehler had a high game of 162 for Celina at Plaza Lanes. Haylee Stukey had a 251 two-game score and Avery Boroff rolled a 143 for Parkway.
