Roundup: Ohio Northern falls in Division III volleyball tourney

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — No. 20-ranked Ohio Northern was eliminated by No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater 25-17, 25-22, 26-24 in a NCAA III Tournament first-round match Thursday night at Van Noord Arena.

The fourth-seeded Warhawks (25-7 overall) advance to play top-ranked Calvin (Michigan) a 25-22, 25-20, 25-14 winner against Greenville (Illinois), tonight.

The fifth-seeded Polar Bears end their Ohio Athletic Conference championship season with a 22-8 record.

Ohio Northern got nine kills from Madi Ellis (Delphos St. John’s), eight kills from McKenna Jordan and seven kills from All-American Chelsea Huppert and Paige Hartings (Coldwater).

Setter Katie Wade had 28 assists 17 digs andMcKenna Hostetler had 26 digs for ONU.

“I thought we played well defensively,” ONU head coach Kate Witte said. “We were good on serve receive and passed the ball well. But Whitewater was big and physical at the net and that caused us a great deal of difficulty. We struggled offensively at the net. I’m proud of what our team accomplished this season. Getting to the NCAA Tournament is a great accomplishment.”

Bluffton players

BLUFFTON — Bluffton’s Timothy Murphy and Dalton Taynor have been named honorable mention All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conferencefollowing the 2018 season. were honored for their work on the pitch.

The HCAC also announced the Christopher M. Ragsdale All-Sportsmanship Awards for the fall of 2018. Bluffton’s Eric Bender was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The award was developed as part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-Sportsmanship Team are selected by the coaches and their teammates as individuals who demonstrate the ideals of positive sportsmanship on and off the field.

Columbus Grove graduate Paige Bellman had six points, nine rebounds and an assist as starter for Detroit Mercy in its 68-60 season opening victory against Michigan-Dearborn.

Mercy will next play at Ohio State at 7 p.m. Friday.

LIMA — A designer purse raffle is being held to benefit the Lima Senior lacrosse team and its spring training trip to Orlando, Florida.

Tickets are $25 and include multiple chances to win. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the athletic department at 419-996-3050, coach Nate Garlock at 419-996-3245 or a member of the boys lacrosse team.

Cash or checks accepted. Checks should be made out to Lima Senior Lacrosse.

The first drawing will be held Friday, Dec. 7, during halftime of the varsity boys basketball game against Oregon Clay. The rest will be drawn at other home games throughout the season. Being present is not required to win and there is no limit on tickets.

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee’s Christian Ford and Dalton Miller will be signing a letters of intent at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Room 101 at Shawnee High School. Ford will be running track and Youngstown State and Dalton is set to play baseball for Indiana Wesleyan.
