KALIDA — Josh Verhoff’s knocked in the game-winner during a penalty kick shootout to give the host Wildcats at 2-1 victory against Bluffton in Saturday’s Division III boys soccer final.
Connor Krouse, Colin Erhart and Grant Laudick also converted on their attempts to win the shootout portion 4-3 after two overtime periods.
“It was two very evenly matched teams,” Kalida coach Mark Czubik said.
During the preseason Czubik said he may have “planted the seed” for his team when he told his players he thought they had the talent and ability to reach the district final.
Bluffton took a 1-0 lead with about 13 minutes remaining in regulation with Krause then tying the game on a penalty kick with under 4 minutes left.
The Wildcats will next take on Archbold at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Findlay High School.
“We will have our hands full,” Czubik said.

DELPHOS — The host Blue Jays (2-7, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) were unable to prevent the playoff-bound Rockets (8-2, 7-1 MAC) from gaining a share of the conference title.
Jared Wurst connected with Jacob Huelskamp on pass plays of 17 and 22 yards for the DSJ touchdowns. Riley Huelskamp led Anna three TD runs and a touchdown reception on a throw by Bart Bixler, who had a pair TD passes.
