Roundup: Delphos Jefferson hires Smelser as AD, Billiter as girls basketball coach

DELPHOS — Jefferson has hired a new athletic director and high school girls varsity basketball coach.

The Delphos Jefferson Board of Education named Kent Smelser as the new athletic director during Monday night’s meeting.

Smelser served as the Van Wert High School athletic director from 1998-2017. He was Van Wert’s varsity football head coach from 1990-95 and an assistant coach from 1999-2003 and again in 2017. His football coaching experience dates back to 1978 where he worked as an assistant at Celina. He also has coached freshman basketball, served as a varsity track assistant and coached junior high wrestling.

He graduated from Celina High School and received his bachelor of science in education from Bowling Green State University and a masters from Miami University. He has served as the Western Buckeye League commissioner from 2016 to the present.

The board also named Chrissy Billiter as the new girls varsity basketball coach.

Billiter was the head coach at her alma mater Elida for six seasons, is a member of the school’s hall of fame, and played for Bowling Green State University, where she received an elementary education degree. She also has coaching experience in JV softball, eighth grade volleyball, seventh grade softball, seventh grade basketball, freshman girls basketball and JV girls basketball all at Elida except one year at North Junior High.



Elgin’s Brock Stoner (player of they year) and Mike James (coach of the year) received top honors in the Northwest Central Conference.

Joining Stone on the first team were Elgin’s Jacob Neal and Jordan Brown, Lehman Catholic’s Bryce Kennedy and Drew Barhorst, Riverside’s Aaron Kean and Trey Lane, Upper Scioto Valley’s Jason Moots, Perry’s Logan Liles and Jon Sawyer and Ridgemont’s Cole McKinley.

Coldwater 4, Lincolnview 3

COLDWATER — The Lancers fell short after trailing 4-1. Jack Muhlenkamp had two hits and an RBI and Sam Broering and Nathan Gunden each had two hits for the Cavaliers. Jaden Youtsey had a double and an RBI and Thad Walker had a hit and an RBI for Lincolnview.


Games postponed

The Lincolnview-Columbus Grove and Ada-Wayne Trace Division IV district semifinals at Elida were postponed until 4 p.m. Wednesday with Lincolnview playing Grove in the opener. The Fairview-Paulding D-III district semifinal at Bath has been moved to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Minster-New Bremen and Parkway-Fort Recovery D-IV districts semis at Wapakoneta will be played starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday with Minster and New Bremen playing first.


Riverside’s Kristin Davidson (player of the year) and Andy Phelps (coach of the year) received top honors in the Northwest Central Conference.

Joining Davidson on the first team were Riverside’s Marissa Davis, Jalynn Stanley and Shelby Giles, Elgin’s Krosbi Clark, Bekah Muselin and Ashley Roth, Hardin Northern’s Cassidy Deckling and Haylei Pees, Lehman Catholic’s Grace Monnin and Perry’s Kelsey Wells.

duo pick schools

LIMA — Two Lima Senior athletes will be signing national letters of intent at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lima Senior Teacher’s Lounge.

Cory Clair will run track at Cincinnati Christian University. Clair is a two-year varsity letter winner.

Taylen Ingram, a first year varsity letter winner, will play baseball at UNOH.

accepting nominations

LIMA — The Lima City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations for next year’s induction class.

The Hall of Fame honors teams, athletes, coaches and contributors from Lima Senior, Central High School and South High School.

The categories for nomination are:

Athlete: Eligible for nomination four years following graduation from the Lima City Schools.

Team: Eligible for nomination after four years.

Coach: Eligible for nomination after four years of no longer coaching for the Lima City Schools.

Sports Contributor: A sports contributor can be an individual or group who has helped to develop and foster the growth of athletics in the Lima City Schools athletic community.

Any athlete, coach, community member of group who has had significant impact on the athletic community may also be eligible for nomination.

The deadline for nominations is Sept 14. Nomination forms are available in the Lima Senior Athletic Office.
