Shawnee wins on Thomas’ hit in 8th

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Jared Thomas knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the host Indians opened their baseball season with a 7-7 victory Saturday against Columbus Grove.

It was one of two hits for Thomas, who also was the winning pitcher and had two RBI. Jake Hutchins had two hits, including a double, and two RBI and Justin Behnke had two hits and two RBI also for Shawnee.

Wyatt Sybert had two hits and two RBI and Dane Schroeder had two hits for Grove.

Lima Senior,

Fort Jennings split

LIMA — Fort Jennings defeated Lima Senior 5-2, and the Spartans beat the Musketeers 4-0.

In Fort Jennings’ win, Derek Luersman had two hits and an RBI, Brandon Wehri had two hits and Derek Lersman was the winning pitcher, going 6 1/2 innings and allowing two earned runs, five hits and four walks while striking out five. Taylen Ingram had two hits for Lima Senior.

In Lima Senior’s victory, Bryce Binkley had two hits and an RBI and James Gaines was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and allowing six hits and a walk while striking out four.

Bluffton splits

ADRIAN, Mich. — A 6-3 victory in the opener and an 18-13 seventh-inning lead in game two had the Beavers on the verge of a sweep before Adrian rallied for six runs and a 19-18 victory, making it a split. Bluffton moved to 5-12 on the season while Adrian is 7-5.

ONU goes 1-1

TIFFIN — Senior Kirsten Lightel threw a 3-hit shutout in dominating fashion to lead Ohio Northern to a double header split at Heidelberg’s Fran’s Field.

The Polar Bears (11-3 overall, 1-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) won the opener 3-0 behind Lightel’s 12-strikeout shutout.

The Student Princes (10-6, 1-1) rallied for a 5-0 victory in the second game of the day.

Baseball

ONU swept

ADA — ONU fell 8-6, 10-3 in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference contests with Heidelberg at Wander Field.

The Polar Bears fell to 10-6 overall and 0-2 in the OAC, while the Student Princes improved to 12-3 (2-0 OAC).

Men’s lacrosse

ONU 17, Beloit (Wis.) 6

ADA — The Polar Bears had a record-setting performance on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears continue the best start to a season in program history by improving to 7-1, while the Buccaneers fell to 4-3.

Sophomore Cameron Marous set an ONU single-game record with 10 points on the day, scoring four goals and tying an ONU single-game record with six assists.

Men’s tennis

ONU 9, Heidelberg 0

LIMA — Ohio Northern opened the OAC portion of its schedule against Heidelberg at the Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 7-4 overall and, while the Student Princes fell to 0-11.

Northern got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles courts in convincing fashion, dropping only two games.

Junior Tim Kargl and senior Cody Hurley won 8-0 at No. 3, while freshmen Vinh Thai and Houng Do won 8-1 at No. 1 and Junior Jake Abbott (Kenton) and sophomore Connor Christian won 8-1 at No. 2.

Freshman Drew Sarno (Elida) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and freshman Joji Imatomi won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match.

Women’s tennis

ONU 9, Heidelberg 0

LIMA — Ohio Northern began OAC play at the Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center.

The Polar Bears improved to 11-3 overall while the Student Princes fell to 0-10.

Northern swept all nine courts in straight sets, losing only 10 games in the entire match.
