TOLEDO — It started with Anthony Wayne and ended with Anthony Wayne.
Lima Senior’s first game of the boys basketball season was an overtime victory over the Generals, but in the rematch in a Division I district semifinal game on Wednesday night at the University of Toledo the decision went to Anthony Wayne 56-51.
Lima Senior led early but once Anthony Wayne got the lead, it didn’t give it up.
The Generals led by as many as nine points, 45-36, early in the fourth quarter. Lima Senior closed the margin to two points, 51-49, with 37 seconds to play but could not get any closer.
Max Bradfield scored 13 points to lead Anthony Wayne (17-7) and was unflappable at the free throw line in the fourth quarter when he hit 10 for 10.
Bryan Miller Jr. led Lima Senior with 17 points and Jatsiel Colon scored 13 points, all in the second half, and tied Jaleel King for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
The loss dropped Lima Senior’s final record to 12-12.
Anthony Wayne will play Toledo St. John’s at 2 p.m. Saturday for the district championship. The Titans defeated Toledo Central Catholic 64-32 in Wednesday night’s other semifinal.
Lima Senior shot 43 percent on field goals, compared to 35 percent for Anthony Wayne. Both teams had 32 rebounds. But one of the big differences was at the free throw line where Lima Senior was 8 of 17 and Anthony Wayne was 15 of 18.
Anthony Wayne led 27-22 at halftime after surviving an early surge by Lima Senior.
Lima Senior was never behind in the first half until the last five minutes of the second quarter. The Spartans jumped out to a 9-5 lead and were up 15-13 after one quarter.
Anthony Wayne took its first lead at 21-20 on a 3-pointer by 6-9 post player Alex Ruhe with 5:12 left in the first half.
The Generals outscored the Spartans 11-2 in the last 5:12 of the first half.
