OTTOVILLE — Lima Central Catholic’s Avery Rice was determined to score against Ottoville.

But after missing a penalty kick and two solid scoring opportunities it appeared Rice would be denied a goal in the first half. However as time was expiring in the first 40 minutes, the talented junior blasted one from around 30 feet from the left side of the field that arched past Ottoville’s Brittany Winhover and nestled into the right side of the net as time expired.

Rice’s buzzer beating goal at the end of the first stanza would prove to be the game winner as a second half defensive stand by LCC held the Big Green scoreless and the Thunderbirds captured the the 1-0 win over Ottoville and the Division III sectional title Wednesday night.

“That crazy, last second goal,” LCC head coach Mike Santaguida said. “We had so many opportunities and we were like ‘something has to go for us.’ We just kept pounding with the wind at our backs and we kept the ball on their defensive end the whole time and we just kept going and going and got one to go for us.”

Rice’s score is her fourth of the postseason.

Ottoville head coach Tim Kimmet said he expected this type of game.

“That is what this game was going to come down to,” Kimmet said. “It was a little bit of bad luck on our part that she was able to get that in at the last second without us clearing it.”

LCC (9-6-2) advances to the district semifinals against Coldwater on Wednesday at Ottoville. Coldwater defeated Delphos Jefferson 3-2.

The Big Green, who say good-bye to 10 seniors, finishes their year with a 12-3-2 mark. Two of those losses came at the hands of the Thunderbirds.

While Rice provided the necessary offense, the Thunderbirds’ back line and goalie got the job done on defense.

Led by sweeper Halley Koenig and the tandem of Cecilia Riepenhoff and Madi Gendreau, the Thunderbird defense thwarted several Big Green offensive surges especially in the second half when Ottoville’s offense turned up the heat in hopes of gaining the equalizer.

“With the wind in the second half that gave us a little advantage and we were down there quite a bit but we had to finish too and we did not do that,” Kimmet said.

Santaguida, who said they worked on defense this year, added that Gendreau is coming off an injury and so he said it was nice to see her do well against a tough Big Green squad.

The LCC head coach also pointed out the play of Josie Mohler in the middle where she battled Big Green players all night and used headers to break up several Ottoville runs.

“My defense just stepped up and kept the ball out of the net,” Santaguida said. “Hat’s off to Ottoville. They did not quit and played hard.”

Credit LCC’s freshman goalie Kitt Siatkoky, who finished with five saves, with the majority of those coming in the second half.
