Wapak wins tourney, finishes in tie for WBL crown with Shawnee

CELINA – Shawnee and Wapakoneta tied for the Western Buckeye League championship following Thursday’s league tournament at Celina Lynx Golf Club.

Wapak won the tournament with a 306 total followed by Shawnee (321), Defiance (328), Bath (340), St. Marys (344), Ottawa-Glandorf (354), Van Wert (358), Elida (363), Kenton (371) and Celina (465)

The league awarded 10 points to Wapak for winning the tournament and nine to Shawnee for finishing second. Bath won the dual-meet championship, receiving 10 points, followed by Shawnee (9), Wapak (8), Defiance (7), St. Marys (6), Kenton (5), Elida and O-G (3.5 each), Van Wert (2) and Celina (1).

The Redskins and Shawnee finished with combined scores of 18 each followed by Bath (17), Defiance (15), St. Marys (12), O-G (8.5), Kenton (7), Elida (6.5), Van Wert (2) and Celina (1).

Shawnee’s Keaton McKinley defeated Wapak’s Logan Miller in a playoff for medalist honors after each shot even-par 72s. Wapak’s Tanner Sweede (74), Bath’s Isaiah Bolon (77), St. Marys’ Jill Schmitmeyer (77), Van Wert’s Jared Hernandez (77), Wapak’s Drew Zwiebel (78), O-G’s Austin Radcliff (79), Defiance’s Jacob Black (79) and Shawnee’s Sam Reed (80) also finishing in the top 10.

Jared Hernandez won player of the year honors for having the most combined dual and tournament points. Joining him in earning all-league honors were Schmitmeyer, Sweede, McKinley, Bolon, Radcliffe, Miller, Black, Bath’s Hunter Iiames, Kenton’s Rocco Longbrake, Reed and Defiance’s Will Lammers.

Those receiving honorable mention recognition were Elida’s Logan Long, Zwiebel, Bath’s Jeremiah Bolon, Celina’s Lance Mawer, Shawnee’s John Barker, St. Marys’ Austin Boley, Van Wert’s Austin Bissonette, Defiance’s Jack Vanderhorst, Kenton’s Cole Dearing and O-G’s Evan Ellerbrock.

Mawer (90), Long (81) and Longbrake (82) had the low tournament rounds for their respective schools.
