Roundup: Ohio Northern’s Serbin makes D-III All-America team

ADA — Ohio Northern senior Brynn Serbin was named to the 2023 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Coaches’ All-America team, the WBCA announced Thursday.

The 10-member team is selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches from Division III.

Serbin was also recently named the 2023 D3hoops.com Region 7 Player of the Year as a member of the All-Region First Team, putting her in contention for All-American honors from D3hoops.com.

The Polar Bears finished with a record of 25-5 this season, including a 15-3 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play. Northern won the OAC regular season and tournament championships en route to earning the 10th NCAA Tournament bid in program history.

Serbin averaged 14.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game in 2022-23. She ranked second in the conference in scoring average and led the conference with 134 assists and 81 steals, both of which are program records for a single season. Her 429 points in 2022-23 rank fifth all-time at ONU for a single season.

Bluffton wins 2

BLUFFTON — The Beavers defeated Heidelberg 8-7 and 12-4.

In the 8-7 win, Bluffton’s Sammi Urban had three hits and two RBI and Bobbi Adams homered.

In the 12-4 victory, Sydney Zinkon finished with three hits and four RBI and Adams homered again.

Polar Bears go 1-1

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. — Ohio Northern split a pair of 6-2 decisions on the fourth day of the team’s spring break trip at the Auburndale Softball Complex.

The Polar Bears (4-4 overall) began the morning with a loss to Saint Mary’s (Ind.) and then topped Lakeland (Wis.).

Against Lakeland (5-4), Ashley Lenser pitched a complete-game three-hitter to improve to 3-1 on the season. Teammate Kaylie Griffin had a solo homer.

Against St. Mary’s, Callie Rosser and Hailey Fraser each had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Men’s tennis

ONU 6, Springfield 3

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ohio Northern defeated Springfield (Mass.) in the penultimate match of its spring break trip at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 5-5 overall while dropping the Pride to 6-5.

Northern trailed 2-1 after doubles play, getting an 8-3 victory at No. 3 from Tristan Munteanu and T.J. Schultz.

ONU then won five of the six singles courts to secure the victory.

Munteanu won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Peyton Specht won 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 at No. 2, Sam Sran won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Kavya Desai won 6-1, 7-6 at No. 4, and Nico Rogel won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

Women’s tennis

ONU 6, Springfield 3

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ohio Northern won its fourth straight match with a 6-3 victory against Springfield (Mass.) at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.

The Polar Bears remain unbeaten on their spring break trip and improve to 7-3 overall while dropping the Pride to 4-4.

Northern won two of the three doubles courts.

Jamie Hurst and Julianne Sheldon won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Abby Cruser and Flo Sanchez won 8-2 at No. 3.

ONU proceeded to take four of the six singles matches.

Hurst won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Jenna Bell (won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Regan Landis won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Katie O’Connell won 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 6.

The Polar Bears fall to 4-3, while the Blue Devils improve to 5-2.

ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s and women’s outdoor teams were each picked to finish third in the Ohio Athletic Conference 2023 preseason coaches’ poll.

The Mount Union and John Carroll men and women were ranked first and second respectively.
