Licking County and Xenia advanced to the best-of-three semifinal playoffs in the Great Lakes Collegiate League Wednesday with one-game, play-in wins.
Licking County advances to face the No. 1 seed Lima Locos in Game 1 of the semifinals at 7 p.m. tonight at Simmons Field. Game 1 and Game 3 (Saturday) are at home. Game 2 (Friday) will be at Don Edwards Field in Newark.
Xenia advances to face the No. 2 seed Hamilton in the semifinals starting tonight at Hamilton. Game 1 and Game 3 are at Hamilton.
In Wednesday’s play-in games, No. 3 seed Xenia rolled No. 6 seed Grand Lake 14-2 at Xenia.
Licking County, the No. 5 seed, defeated No. 4 seed Southern Ohio 6-3 at Athens.
For Licking County, Michael Ketchmark went 2 for 5 with five RBI. His two-run single in the eighth inning gave the Settlers the lead to stay, 5-3.
This year the Locos took the season series from Licking County 2-0, winning both games at Newark, 6-1 and 8-3 in 11 innings. Licking County is the three-time defending GLCL champion.
It marks the fifth straight year that the Locos have played Licking County in a best-of-three playoff series, with the Settlers winning the last three times.
Licking defeated the Locos 2-1 in the semifinals last year. Licking defeated the Locos 2-0 in the GLCL championship series in 2013. Licking defeated the Locos 2-1 in the semifinals in 2012.
The Locos defeated Licking 2-1 in the 2011 semifinals.
