As a U.S. Army veteran, I want to thank you for flying the American flag. I am proud to see so many of them flown. I know my father, Wayne Rader,(AKA the flagman) would be proud as well. I would like to remind my fellow citizens that Memorial Day is coming up on May 30th. The flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon to honor our fallen, then to full staff until sunset to honor all other veterans.

I drive all over northwest Ohio for my job. I see so many U.S. flags that need to be replaced. Look at your flag. Is it faded? Is it frayed on the edges? Does it look more like a streamer than the American flag? Is it half gone?

If so, then replace it with an American-made U.S. flag. You might be able to buy them at your local veteran clubs, to help our fellow veteran programs. If not, most of the box stores have them.

Please be sure to properly dispose of your old flag. Most veterans organizations, along with some of the Boy Scout troops, will dispose of them, respectfully and with honor. I know that VFW Post 1275 on Elm and Main in Lima has a mailbox on the west side of the building where you can drop them off.

I also see too many U.S. flags that are half U.S. flag and half something else on it. Please do not fly them. The U.S. flag is also not a pattern to be used for your favorite sports team either. To me, this is disrespectful to our flag.

If you are flying the flag upside down, fix it. You are not on a military base, so you are not under duress. It doesn’t matter what you think the state of the country is in or what your political views are.
