High school and middle school coaches, your kids are now playing longer for their AAU teams than they are playing for you in the winter. Travel basketball season now lasts five months. Your kids are more influenced by these coaches to play basketball their way, then your way. I’m not saying it’s a bad way; it’s probably just not your way.
School teams playing together in the summer was a great way for players and coaches to form a closer bond under conditions not as intense or high pressure as the school season. This relationship-building tool is almost nonexistent today, and it shows during the school season.
There is nothing more powerful than a team that wants to win for their coach and a coach who wants to win for his team. This can never happen when players have one foot in AAU and one on a school team. AAU coaches are only concerned with your two best players; you are responsible for ALL your players.
Coaches, make high school basketball great again! Take your teams back from the AAU programs in June and July, and start building a relationship with your kids and lay a foundation to be successful in February and March.
