For too long, small businesses like mine have tried and failed to convince politicians in Columbus to let us benefit from expanded gambling. We just saw our losing streak end, when Ohio finally passed a law to allow businesses like mine to offer sports betting to customers.
My brother and I own Westgate Entertainment Center, which has been in our family since 1958. We offer a full-service restaurant, arcade and bowling, but our customers have made it clear they’d also like to come and watch a few games and maybe win a little money by betting on their favorite teams.
Many hospitality businesses are still struggling from pandemic-related losses. Sports betting will help those businesses attract and retain customers.
When Ohio allowed casinos to enter the state, just a handful of large cities reaped the benefits of this exciting new industry. Under the new law, thousands of small and medium cities like Lima will be helped.
I’d like to thank The Lima News for reporting on this important topic. I also would like to thank Senate President Matt Huffman and House Speaker Bob Cupp for their support of this issue.
