Letter: Shawnee will use funds wisely

The classified staff members at Shawnee Schools would like to extend our support to the upcoming Shawnee School Levy. We are the network technician, bus drivers, mechanics, maintenance staff, grounds staff, custodians, secretaries, paraprofessionals, cafeteria staff and study hall monitors. You can see us serving lunch, helping students, cleaning classrooms, grooming fields, fixing what’s broken, supporting other staff and picking up the students daily.

Shawnee has many moving parts, we all have our piece in the puzzle, and we are happy to support in our capacity. We would like to invite the community to reach out to us with any questions about the levy so we can help you put your piece in the puzzle.

In 2009, our district had its income from business cut by $4 million due to the state’s decision to eliminate the tangible personal property tax, a tax paid by businesses on their inventory. A new comparable income source has never replaced this loss and despite significant reductions to the district budget, we cannot maintain operations and our current level of academic excellence without a new income source.

It has been our pleasure to serve the Shawnee community and students. We hope you will join us in voting for the levy on May 4th to support Shawnee schools, our students, our future and our community.

Samantha Thompson

Parent, Custodian,

Shawnee Resident,
