Letter: Providing the tools for today’s work force

According to recent data from Ohio Means Jobs Allen County, there are over 1,900 jobs available in the Greater Lima region. Many of those jobs require some form of skilled training.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our economy and one way we can help it recover and grow is to ensure our work force has the skills needed to fill the unfilled jobs in key industries like manufacturing, IT, and health care. This is why U.S. Senator Rob Portman’s newly introduced Jumpstart Our Businesses By Supporting Students (JOBS) Act is so essential right now. This bipartisan bill will make Pell grants, that are normally reserved for undergraduate education, to be available for use on high-quality, short-term skills training courses at technical schools and community colleges, expanding access to these invaluable programs to lower-income Ohioans.

At Apollo Career Center we talk to both our high school and adult students about being “next ready” as opposed to college or career ready since people do not know where life will take them. The JOBS Act will give people the opportunity to enter into an educational setting where they obtain skills and then build on those skills as they learn to navigate the educational process.

I want to thank Senator Portman for his continued leadership in Washington on legislation to develop the work force we need for our economy to prosper.
