Letter: Levy needed for Shawnee police

I would like to urge Shawnee Township residents to vote for the Shawnee Township Police Department Levy on May 4th.

This critical levy replaces the renewal levy that was left off the ballot and expired in November, with a mere 1.5 mills in addition to help ease the burden. The Shawnee Police Department has not asked for new money since 2005. That’s 16 years. Since then, our population has grown, and police service calls have gone up, but the budget continues to decline. Now the department is faced with outdated equipment that can no longer be fixed and needs to be replaced.

We, as longtime Shawnee residents, choose to live in Shawnee partly because of the amazing police department. The department is very responsive when called and always goes above and beyond the call of duty for their residents. We feel this is an emergency situation.

If this levy is not passed and we must rely on the Sheriff’s Department when there is an emergency, what will the response time be going forward? Will it go from 3 minutes to 30 minutes? Will we get the same caring service? Will the department be cut in half or dissolved? Will property values go down? Will the crime rate skyrocket?

Shawnee Township was named one of the Safest Cities in Ohio this last year and we want to keep it that way. I can’t emphasize enough, that a yes vote for our Shawnee Township Police Department on May 4th is an extremely critical vote.
