Letter: Not your typical ‘Christmas Carol’

Encore Theatre has done it again. They have taken a tried and true story almost everyone knows, sped it up, heightened the hijinks, and created a Christmas classic that is so fast-paced and enjoyable that attendees for the last dress rehearsal of “A Christmas Carol – The Musical” were surprised it was over so quickly.

Coming in at right about 2 hours (including intermission!!) this is by far not only the fastest moving “A Christmas Carol” I have ever seen, but also the most enjoyable. The whirlwind of colors, acting, pacing, and the humor are far removed from the stodgy old telling that some may say “Bah humbug” to.

But an aspect of this show that has probably never been done quite this way before is the music. It makes you wish you were invited to jump up and sing along. (For insurance purposes, jumping onstage and attempting the fast-paced choreography is highly discouraged).

It is my guess that the singing, dancing, and especially the live orchestral accompaniment are like no version of this show that you have ever seen or heard either. The songs are still beautifully sung but do not think that you are going to grab a nap, as the pacing is a marvel, and just as you think you are going to settle in, it is off to the races again.

The show continues the weekend of December 13. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 pm, Sunday shows are at 2 pm, and singing as you walk to your car starts approximately two hours after showtime.
