Letter: Diplomacy needed now

The importance of diplomacy cannot be overstated.

Trump and Pompeo are doing immeasurable damage to our reputation and influence worldwide with their latest decision to put IRGC of Iran under “terrorist organizations”.

Pompeo needs to be reminded that he runs the State Department, not the military. His job isn’t to get us into more conflicts, but rather to avoid them and to manage our international relationships, not destroy them.

Just as we have seen in Afghanistan and our negotiations with the Taliban, there are times we have to accept dealing with people with whom we would rather not deal with. Iran used to be one of our closest allies.

We aren’t safer now that they aren’t. We need to try to forge a detente, not inflame the situation.
