Letter: Long past time to invest in military

We were the world leader in military power, now we are behind Russia and China, with their new supersonic nuclear missile power?

U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson discussed the offensive advantages of hypersonic weapons, which can travel five to six times the speed of sound. The defense systems we have would be unable to track and destroy these new missiles because of the speed of sound, according to the Secretary of Air Force.

I’m not a hawk, however, I do believe in defense of our country. What is going on that we are so far behind in infrastructure, defense? And what worries me most is we’re lacking the capacity for manufacturing goods that are needed for both of these areas. Are we so stupid to be at the mercy of China for steel, aluminum, computers and computer parts and cell phones? Minerals are need for technological advancement.

The following is one paragraph from the findings of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA:

“Here, we compare the net import reliance of 42 minerals for the two largest national economies, China and the United States. We find that China relies on imports for over half of its consumption for 19 minerals, compared with 24 for the United States — 11 of which are common to both. It is for these 11 minerals that competition between the United States and China may become the most contentious.”

Needless to say, I don’t have confidence in Trump’s leadership abilities. He is too busy on Twitter defending himself and criticizing others.
