Letter: Shawnee hasn’t added new money since 2004

On Tuesday, the Shawnee Local School District is asking voters for support on two levies. Both the levies are important to the future of Shawnee Schools.

The district has not added new money since 2004. The new levy will help fund additional security measures of School Resource Officers and mental health support. I am asked many times, why now? The simple answer is these two levies will balance our budget and will allow us to continue to operate at our current level. Without new funds, the district will face some very difficult financial decisions in the near future.

Shawnee School District continues to distinguish itself. Honors from outside organizations, such as Advanced Placement, U.S. News and World Report and National Blue Ribbon School designation acknowledge the ongoing efforts of a very talented staff. Students continue to excel in academics, the arts and athletics, placing in national math and science competitions, earning superior designations in OMEA music contests, placing in juried art exhibitions, and qualifying for state in multiple sports. Most importantly, graduates consistently return with compliments on their preparedness for

the next stage of their lives.

The Shawnee community has always demonstrated a deep pride in its schools and shows earnest support of the quality educational programs that the school district provides. I trust that this community will continue to support the school’s vital role in educating our students. I encourage you to continue the excellence.

Vote FOR Shawnee.

James Kanable, Superintendent Shawnee Local Schools
