Letter: Enjoying meat in a meatless diet

Who says meat has to come from animals?

Animals have always been our go to protein from the ancient days of primeval hunter-gatherers to religious rituals soaked with blood of innocent animals. That was then, this is now. Fortunately for us, 21st century technology and innovation has come to our rescue and to the rescue of 66 million animals slaughtered ever year for food.

The comparison of animal vs plant-based protein is really astonishing! For example: plant protein is packed with fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients whereas animal protein has none. As a matter of fact eggs, chicken, dairy, fish have no fiber either.

High fiber intake is associated with decreased cancer risk especially breast and colon cancers as well as lower risk of ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, constipation and diverticulitis. It may also reduce the risk of stroke, high cholesterol and heart disease. According to the USDA most Americans do not get an adequate amount of dietary fiber.

When I switched to plant-based protein I lost 30 pounds and my health improved greatly. When substituting it for ground beef and chicken, I felt so much better about what went into my body and regarding animal suffering. It tastes the same as animal protein but without the TMAO’s, high phosphorus, cholesterol and amino acids that cause bone health problems.
