Letter: Know price of job beforehand

There is a growing threat of a different kind of elder abuse. My husband and I have experienced it.

There was an article in The Lima News that recommended you not hire your neighbors or friends to do contract work for you. Unfortunately, we are elderly and cannot do the work ourselves any more. We hired a neighbor to paint some trim over our garage. It wasn’t a big job, at most, a two-day job. When we got the bill, it was $299.95.

We should have got an estimate before the job was started.

My husband paid him. This would be a first to have a robber shake your hand with a smile on his face.

We experienced elder monetary abuse by a neighbor. This truly hurts.
