Letter: Guilty of not being like ‘us’

The scenario I am proposing will never happen, but imagine if it did. How would we react in the United States if Canada’s government became dangerously unstable and it’s economy collapsed?

What would American’s do if thousands of desperate, white, English speaking Canadians illegally crossed our northern border asking for asylum?

Would we call them criminals and accuse them of being potential gang members or rapists? Would we lock them up and place their children in hastily constructed detention facilities?

The Central Americans who have been arrested and locked up for illegally crossing our border are, in most cases, guilty of committing a misdemeanor, but the real crime they are being punished for is something they have no control over: They are different from most Americans. They are not like “us.”
