Letter: Mar-A-Lago raid was necessary for democracy

Besides your position on Donald Trump, I was unclear about Don Stratton’s recent column title, “Politically motivated selective enforcement.” I am not sure why you targeted police departments in large cities as more prone to this type of behavior rather than police enforcements in small towns and cities. I guess your adverb “rarely” means that Lima and the surrounding communities are exempt from selective enforcement political or otherwise. About 30 years ago this action was labeled profiling.

The Jan. 6 violators who might have been members of law enforcement, armed forces and citizens were all obligated to defend and protect our country against any and all persons seeking to either disrupt or interfere with the action of the government. Your passive use of the word “attack” strikes at the heart of our democracy and demeans the pledge you and I promised to keep.

The violators were wrong — period — and not just in many cases. They should all be prosecuted with a harsh penalty. They were not fighting for the U.S. Constitution or democracy. They were ignited by their own selfish greed and motives not to defend Trump’s alleged claim of fraud but to engage in a form of collective madness. This was an assault on the United States.

Your defense of Mar-A-Lago to support Trump is without any substance. His staffers and people connected to him all agree that Trump was sloppy, to say the least, with important documents and did the unthinkable and took documents to his residence. How can you refute this as some politically motivated selective enforcement? Trump is not serving a second term because Trump does whatever he wishes. He plays by his own rules.
