Letter: Utopia a fantasy

Tom Riegle, Lima

In a utopia, Michael Cheeseman’sphilosophy of “live and let live” might work, but in the real world sometimes self-defense is necessary for self-preservation (“Racism questions,” June 27).

It would be wonderful to be able to live in a utopian society. In Christianity that destination is called heaven — not Earth.

Have you noticed how gays, women, and other religious groups are treated in Islamic-dominated societies here on Earth? Peace and love may be the best utopian philosophy. However, in the real world, it is only attainable in free societies where freedom didn’t come for free. Some people had to pay with their lives to establish and defend freedom.

Just “turning the other cheek” and feeling sorry for people doesn’t maintain freedom by itself.

Today’s problems in the U.S. are not being caused by conservatives. They are being caused by liberals who label anyone who doesn’t agree with them as angry, hateful, racist and judgmental under the guise of political correctness. Political correctness is killing this country.

Cops are now being called angry and racist for doing their jobs. Teachers are vilified by parents when they discipline. Christians are being persecuted around the globe by atheists and Islamists.

These types of scenarios were not happening a generation ago and one of the main reasons why is because of PC. Any sane person would choose acceptance of others and the promotion of peace, but those two things are not attainable in a “live and let live” environment of liberalism.

Your philosophy of everyone choosing their own way to live and promoting peace while staying out of controversy sounds nice, but it isn’t realistic. Being proactive free-enterprising capitalists instead of reactive welfare socialists promotes peace and tolerance much better.

Our Christian-based nation isn’t perfect, but it has always been one of the most desirable destinations on Earth. I am proud of America.

In a diverse society one man’s heritage will always be another man’s hate. Yes, slavery and white terrorism happened under the American flag, but the actions by whites taken to fight these injustices also happened under the American flag.
