Roses and Thorns

It’s ideal growing conditions in the rose garden, but of course there’s always some thorny weed that pops up.

Rose: To Allen County Sheriff Matt Treglia and Chief Assistant Prosecutor Destiny Caldwell, for speaking to crowds about the impact of Ohio’s new constitutional carry law, which goes into effect June 13. They’ve done a nice job of making sure people understand the new law shifts the onus onto the gun’s holder to be sure they’re eligible to carry a concealed weapon, instead of the sheriff’s office informing you if you are. If you’re convicted of a felony, you’re not eligible, and the sheriff and assistant prosecutor are clear about that.

Thorn: To Joshua McPheron, the so-called dad of TikTok. He’ll escape prison time as long as he follows the terms of his probation after pleading guilty to third- and fourth-degree felony charges of gross sexual imposition involving juveniles.

Rose: To Bath schools and Ohio Northern University graduate Steve Dackin, who was selected as the state’s 39th superintendent of public instruction and leader of the Ohio Department of Education.

Rose: To Gabe’s, the Morgantown, W.Va.-based discount department store, for its decision to open a store in Eastgate Plaza, 2100 Harding Highway. It’s refreshing when we hear about previously vacant businesses, such as the former Chief Supermarket, finding a new commercial use.

Rose: To Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, which recently started a $33 million renovation of one of the oldest patient care buildings on campus.
