COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freshman state Rep. Jon Cross, a Republican from Kenton, wanted to make one thing clear just before Memorial Day.
“I’m 6-foot-4, 290 pounds and won’t be pushed around,” he warned a veteran GOP state senator who had the temerity to question him.
The dust-up started after the Ohio Senate unanimously shot down a House attempt to use Senate Bill 1 to trim the authority of state Health Director Dr. Amy Acton.
“Not one damn Senator wants legislative oversight???” Cross tweeted.
Earlier in the week the Hardin County representative condemned Gov. Mike DeWine’s pledge to enforce health orders requiring social distancing. Cross stated, “I’ll continue to fight like hell not to let DeWine’s police squad threaten or bully our small business owners!”
He warned DeWine, “If your administration unfairly attacks small business owners … I’ll recommend to cut your ‘restaurant/bar police’ budget!”
Sen. Rob McColley, of Napoleon, tweeted back that the measure needed to be fixed to prevent “unintended consequences.”
It was Sen. Jay Hottinger, a Republican legislator from Newark for more than 25 years, who riled Cross. Hottinger wondered whether Cross’ critique stemmed from “freshmen ineptness or laziness.”
Cross, 10 years younger, fired back in a tweet: “You’ll quickly learn this freshman State Rep ‘has a pair’ to pass SB1 & fight FOR #OhioSmallBusiness against @GovMikeDeWine and bullying bureaucrats! I’m 6’4-290pds & won’t be pushed around!”
We’ll let you know of ticket availability if there’s a GOP back alley smackdown.
