In her letter (07-14), Elnora Stratton writes “some…countries…have free education, free health care, but also the highest suicide rate.”
The five highest suicide rates, by nations (World Health Organization, 2015) are Sri Lanka, Guyana, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and the Ivory Coast. These are not, I think, the nations Stratton has in mind.
Sweden, which provides free health care and education, ranks 46th in suicide rates, slightly higher than the United States which ranks 48th, of the 183 nations in the database. Interestingly, Sweden ranks 10th in happiness of the 155 nations in UN data (2017). The United States is not far behind.
