OTTAWA — Hannah Verhoff received a Character Award from the Putnam County Optimist Club for her commitment to academic achievement.
Verhoff, an eighth grader in the Ottawa-Glandorf Local Schools, takes an algebra class at Ottawa-Glandorf High School. In his nomination of Verhoff for the award, principal Jayson Selgo said that he saw Verhoff being picked up by her brother and sister at the high school following classes in early January, even though she had had a medical procedure over Christmas break.
“As I understand, Hannah was not ‘supposed’ to be in school that day by doctor’s orders,” Selgo wrote in his statement nominating Verhoff for the Optimist award. “Although I am quite certain she is capable of missing a few days of class to recover and not fall behind academically, I thought this was a demonstration of her commitment to academic excellence.”
Selgo added, “If Hannah continues to put forth the effort she has demonstrated in this instance and throughout her educational career, she most certainly has a bright future ahead of her.”
