COLUMBUS — Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution and Cooper Farms were recognized by Ohio EPA Director Laurie Stevenson with the agency’s Encouraging Environmental Excellence stewardship award, given to 19 Ohio organizations for their recycling, renewable energy and sustainability programs.
Allen Oakwood earned a silver-level award for reducing its water usage and upping its recycling program, which yielded a 98% landfill diversion rate. The correctional institution has also reduced food waste generation by 60%.
Cooper Farms earned a silver-level award for its active recycling team. The company has reduced waste by washing vehicle air filters for reuse and implementing an effective composting program for food scraps, used animal trailer shavings, eggshells and expired raw feed material.
