Local optometrist wins award

LIMA — The Ohio Optometric Association has recognized local optometrist Dr. Amy Bankey as a top presenter through the association’s Realeyes program, which offers free lessons on eye health and safety to Ohio school children. Bankey, an optometrist with Fishbaugh Family Eyecare in Lima and St. Henry, spoke to more than 2,000 area school children last school year, the association said.

“Vision is important in childhood learning, and vision care is critical to academic development of Ohio’s children,” Bankey said in a statement. “Eighty percent of what a child learns is through sight, and research shows one in four children has an eye disorder yet alarmingly only 14% of children entering school have ever had an eye examination.”
