Locals travel to Ecuador on a gardening venture

SPRING VALLEY — Roxanna Shoffstall, of Lakeview, and Rita Thelen, of Lima, were among 16 volunteers who traveled to highland Ecuador to help indigenous communities with gardening projects during a trip organized by The Tandana Foundation in early February.

Sponsored by The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program, the two locals helped plant 300 vegetables in the garden of the community school in Motilon Chupa, participated in a community workday and Andean tradition called “minga” and weeded the fields of local plant expert Matias Perugachi while learning about Ecuadorian cooking and traditions.

The group was in Ecuador from Feb. 9-16 and stayed in the city of Otavalo.
