LIMA — Gary Schum remembers his father telling him when he was 14 that if he earned the money, he could buy a Cushman scooter.
To his father’s surprise, Schum got a paper route and put back enough money to purchase it in a relatively short time.
“It was the thing to have,” Schum said. “I remember most of my friends had their parents buy theirs. I had to buy mine.”
Schum has always had great memories of riding around on his Cushman with all of his friends who also had scooters. Ten years ago, he decided to recapture some of those memories and began searching for another 1953 Cushman Eagle.
After retiring about 10 years ago, Schum, now 72, began looking for the exact same model that he owned as a kid. After looking for a long time, he found one in Florida and made the purchase.
“It just brings back great memories of when I was a kid,” Schum said. “I have great memories of when I was 14. I wanted to have the same exact model that I had as a kid.”
Cushman Eagles have become somewhat popular on the car show circuit, and Schum proudly displays his. He also owns some classic cars, but said “it is easier to do bikes.”
Schum said one of his most memorable moments was winning his class at the Vintage Bike Show in Portland, Ind.
