Auglaize Co. beef operations to combine

WAPAKONETA — The Ohio Department of Agriculture is seeking public comment on a potential combination of two beef cattle sites into one facility in Auglaize County.

Phillips Farms III is an existing beef facility that consists of two different sites, with the “Dennis Home” site located at 11002 Buckland Holden Road, Wapakoneta, and the “Valgene Home” site located at 11721 Buckland Holden Road, Wapakoneta. Both sites are situated in Logan Township and in the Auglaize River watershed.

Phillips Brothers Farms, LLC is considered an owner and the operator of the facility, with Valgene and Janet Phillips owning a portion of the “Valgene Home” site. The “Dennis Home” site consists of three cattle barns with a current design capacity of 990 beef cattle. The “Valgene Home” site consists of four cattle barns with a current design capacity of 849 beef cattle.

The Phillips family has decided to combine these two sites into one facility, and this would exceed the permit threshold of 1,000 beef cattle. According to the draft Permit to Operate (PTO), the combined facility will have a maximum design capacity of 1,999 head of beef cattle. No new construction is planned with this draft permit, and if approved, the PTO would be valid for five years.

A copy of the draft permit can be obtained by completing a public records request at Any person may submit written comments and/or request a public meeting on the draft permit.

A request for a public meeting must be in writing with the nature of the issues to be raised at the public meeting clearly stated.

Any comments or public meeting requests must be received no later than 5 p.m. Friday. Comments can either be mailed to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Livestock Environmental Permitting, 8995 E. Main Street, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068 or emailed to [email protected] . Comments received after this date will not be considered.
