OTTAWA — Putnam County was ranked the fifth healthiest county in Ohio in the 2022 County Health Rankings report, earning high marks for quality of life, health behaviors and favorable social and economic factors that lead to good health.

The annual report, which measures a variety of health outcomes from obesity and vaccine uptake to teen birth rates and access to primary care physicians in all U.S. counties, ranked Putnam County as the fifth best county in Ohio for both health outcomes and health factors, or habits that contribute to good health.

Health departments use the rankings to identify areas of concern, like high rates of obesity or chronic disease, which determine public health strategies.

Positive trends highlighted in the report show that flu vaccine uptake is higher in Putnam County than in Ohio overall—55% in Putnam County compared to 51% statewide.

Children are less likely to be born at a low birthweight in Putnam County (6%) than in Ohio (9%).

Fewer Putnam County children live in poverty (6%) than in nearby counties like Allen (18%), Hardin (19%) or Van Wert (10%).

And Putnam County claims a lower teen birth rate (14%) than Ohio (21%), the Putnam County Health Department said in a press release Wednesday.

Still, the health department cited a few health behavior metrics to improve, including the rate of excessive drinking, which was higher in Putnam County than the state average.

Auglaize County earned similar marks as the ninth best place in Ohio for health outcomes and the eleventh best for health factors, the only other county in the region to make the top 10 rankings.

Allen County was ranked 59th in Ohio for overall health outcomes and 47th for health factors, with elevated rates of adult smokers, obesity, unemployment and violent crime than Ohio overall.

Allen County Public Health conducted a similar survey of residents last year, the results of which will be released in May as the health department prepares to draft an updated community health action plan.
