SPENCERVILLE — Charles River Laboratories is investing $43 million in its Spencerville laboratory, which will create 105 full-time jobs at the Northwest Ohio research lab, the company and the Ohio Department of Development announced Monday.

The Spencerville site is expanding its laboratory and administrative space by 88,000 square feet, including the creation of a swine research facility, according to a the company.

The lab is one of 22 Charles River preclinical research facilities in the world, providing preclinical and clinical laboratory services to the biotech, medical device and pharmaceutical industries from Spencerville.

The company already employs 270 people at its Spencerville location.

The expansion will create 105 jobs, generating an estimated $6.6 million in new annual payroll and retaining $15.1 million in existing payroll, according to the ODD.

“Workforce is the critical component in the required development process,” Rusty Rush, general manager of the Spencerville lab, said in a press release Monday. “We have a large number of universities we can draw technical staff from, and we’ve had great success attracting PhD-level talent.”

To assist the expansion, the Ohio Tax Credit Authority on Monday approved an eight-year 1.541% job creation tax credit.

Ohio House Speaker Bob Cupp and Senate Leader Matt Huffman on Monday praised the deal for providing the region with an economic boost and high-tech jobs. JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef likewise praised the investment, calling Charles River “a national leader in healthcare innovation.”

The Regional Growth Partnership and Allen Economic Development Group assisted in securing the investment.
